Subject: Re: William I Ct. Of Burgundy
William married Etienette, which when rendered in it's English
equivalent is Stephanie. Was she from Barcelona or Longwy? Her
identity has long been a matter of debate. In an article on the subject,
de
Vajay listed six different traditional derivations for her. He then
added
a seventh. She seems to have had a spanish connection, since her son
Raimond was called cousin of Henry of Burgundy (duchy), whose mother
would appear to have been of the house of Barcelona. Likewise, she
seems to have had northern kin. De Vajay hypothesized that she was
daughter of Albert of Longwy by a daughter of Ramon, Count of Carcasona
(whose wife was daughter of the Count of Barcelona). Keep in mind that
he had no referece for most of this at all. It is basically a house of
cards, which sure looks pretty, but . . .
Europaische Stammtafeln ii, 190 confirms her as WILLIAM's wife.
