married CONSTANCE, heiress of Brittany, to whom he had been betrothed
while both were young children, in 1181. He was recognized as Duke of
Brittany and he and Constance appear to have enjoyed a happy union and
Brittany was in a relative state of calm. Unfortunately, in 1186, after
only 5 years of marriage, Geoffrey was killed in a tournement in Paris.
Galliou and Jones' book, "The Bretons" adds some insight:
"From 1171 to 1181 it was directly to HENRY II that the seneshal and
justiciar of the Duchy - both novel offices - answered. Even when
Geoffrfey was finally allowed to marry CONSTANCE in 1181 and go to
Brittany, his father kept a close watch on his actions, though the
notorious quarrels within the Angevin family, as the king and his sons
frequently waged open war on each other, allowed Geoffrey a freedom to
intrigue which he was not slow to exploit. Nevertheless, in a few short
years, between 1166 and 1186, the Angevins succeeded in bringing a
degree of governmental organization to Brittany that was of enduring
significance."
it is of interest that it was Geoffrey - an Angevin, who took the first
steps in moving the duchy more closely under the control of the French
crown. See the notes on his wife, CONSTANCE, and their son, Arthur, for
more details.
