Notes

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart p. 100. Page 101: "a source of

information for this book. . . When he was a boy, in 1870, the family moved

to Yarmouth where he has since lived. . . He shipped as a cook at the age of

15 and for the next twenty years served aboard the stone sloops Rocky

Mountain, Twilight, Annie May and Riverside. By the late 1880s and 1890s

he was mate and acting captain at times. About 1895 he and his cousin had

the lobster smack - schooner "My Fancy", then Mr. Curit turned to the land.

He evidently inherits all the "might and main" of the blood he inherits -

Hamilton - Littlefield - Curit - Estes - long lived and hard workers - he is now

approaching 92 - 'dug a barrell of clams at one tide at the age of 86 and a

few weeks ago' (I quote from a letter) "I just work around the house now -

during the last eight days I have sawed and split two cords of slab wood and

put it under cover". He is quite an artist - his paintings of ships are

interesting and his ship models are fine - he made the model of the stone

sloop "Annie May" which Mrs. William McCall has in her home on Chebeague.

He made it in 1920."

The Sumpter/Hathaway Family Tree on ancestry.com provides the exact

birthdate and approx. death date. Also mentioned are the additional facts

that he helped build the breakwaters at Royal River and South Portland and

that he worked in a pulp mill and a sardine plant.
