He inherited the lordships of Clun and Oswestry from his father. His
mother was heiress to the honor of Arundel. When she died her husband
inherired it. He then passed it on to John, making him de jure Earl of
Arundel. John, however seems to have never been referred to by that
title. He took part in the Welsh war of 1258, and though sometimes
leagued with the barons against the Crown, was, while fighting on the
Royal side, taken prisoner at the battle of Lewes, in 1264, along with
King HENRY III (RIN 783).
It was not until 1282 that Isabel, Countess of Arundel, the widow of
Hugh D'Aubigny, Earl of Arundel died. It may very well be that the the
Earldom was not dealt with during her lifetime, explaining why neither
John nor his son, who both predeceased Isabel were never refered to As
Earls of Arundel.
