(Dayton, Ohio - Dayton Historical Publishing Co. 1923) :

"August J. Jeiger has for many years been successfully engaged in the

bottling business in South Bend. He was born in Poland . . . on November

4, 1878, the son of John and Katherine Jeiger. . . August J. Jeiger was one

of 9 children in the family : August J., Anna, John, Ellen [should be Helen],

Leo, Bertha, Frank, Geonophine, and Francis [same as Frank - the other

child should be Valeria/Laura]. He was educated at St. Hedwig's

parochial school, of which church the family were members, and then

worked for the Singer Manufacturing Co. for 9 years. He was promoted to

the selling department of that great organization, and continued in the

capacity of salesman until 1907. In that year, his ambition and

foresight having moved him to put aside a part of his earnings against

the day when he would need capital, he took his savings and invested in a

bottling business. This venture proved successful, and he has continued

it since that time. He is popular in local fraternal circles, being a

member of the Z.B.'s no. 1 and the Falcons nos. 1 and 2. He was married on

May 6, 1901 to Veronica Mindykowski, and they have 3 children, Frances,

the wife of Tony Avald (sic - Ewald) of South Bend, Adeline, aged

fifteen, and Edward, aged 6. The family are communicants of Saint

Adalbert's Catholic Church."

From an old newspaper clipping:

I recevied for Christmas a blue bottle twelve inches high,

with a metal pump on top. Both the bottle and spray top are

marked: Aug. J. Jegier, Purity Brand Beverages, South Bend

Ind., Contents 26 oz. Can You tell me when this place was in business and

what the bottle was for? - Mrs. H.B., Niles

The sprayer bottle you have was probably used for soda water or seltzer

water, as it was commonly called 50 years ago. A bottle expert could

tell you for sure. Purity Brand Beverages were manufactured by Jaguar

Bottling Works in the 1920s and 30s. Owner August J. Jegier operated

the company from his home at 2024 W. Division (now Western). The

business began about 1923 and Jegier moved it to a building next door to

his house in the early '30s. Some of Jegier's relatives took over the

company about 1931, and it was disbanded about 1940. A number of

small bottling companies operated much the same way in that section of

South Bend in the early part of the century. Before starting Jaguar

Bottling Works, Jegier operated Polonia Soda Water Co. in the same

location for more than10 years.

August J. Jegier

August J. Jegier, aged 62, of 2024 Western avenue, former operator of

the August J. Jegier Bottling works, died at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday in

Healthwin Hospital after five years' illness. Born in Poland Nov.4, 1878,

he came to South Bend from that country 51 years ago. Surviving is the

widow, Veronica; two daughters, Mrs. Frances Ewald and Mrs. Adeline

Steszewska; a son, Edmund Jegier; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Radecka, Mrs.

Helen Salamon, and Mrs. Bertha Bartosiak, all of South Bend, and Mrs.

Laura Pererson of Detroit, Mich; three brothers, John and Frank Jegier, of

South Bend, and Leo Jegier, of Detroit; and six grandchildren. Friends

will be received in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Steszewska, 1240 Vassar

avenue. The funeral will be held Saturday morning in St.

Adalbert's Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Aloysius P. Jarka, pastor,

officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Polish cemeterty.

The 1910 census for Portage Twp., South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana, ED

170, sheet 10B - at 234 S. Chapin St.:

. August Jegier, age 31, 8 years in present marriage, he & parents born in

Germany (Po) [Poland], immigrated in 1890, PA, manufacturer, soda water,

renting house.

. Verna, wife, age 31, born in Indiana, parents born in Germany (Po)

[Poland].

. Frances, dau., age 7, born in Indiana.

. Adeline, dau., age 2, born in Indiana.

Strangely, there is no 1920 census listing for Anthony. There is a listing,

however for his wife & children:

The 1920 census for district 260, South Bend city, St. Joseph Co., Indiana

(Ancestry.com image 26 of 35), at 2024 [street name is missing, but

previous & following entries would indicate that it would be Division St. (now

Western Ave)], lists, as head of household, Verna Jegier, homeowner with a

mortgage, age 41, marital status illegible [but not m, s, div, sep, or wid],

she & entire household born in Indiana, her parents born in Germany,

speaking Polish, making soda water.

. Frances, dau., age 17, single, seamer, factory.

. Adeline, dau., age 12

. Edmund, son, age 3

. Joseph, son, age 13 [note: Adeline has no recollection of a brother

Joseph. This is apparently an error made by the enumerator. If he did

indeed exist, he would have been listed as a 3 year old in the 1910 census!)

. The 1930 census for district 36, South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana

(Ancestry.com image 8 of 57) at 2024 Division St. [now Western Ave.]:

. August Jegier, owner of home valued at $12,000, owning a radio, age 51,

first married at age 22, he & parents born in Poland, immigrated in 18__,

naturalized, propriator, bottling works, nothing in veteran status column.

. Verna, wife, age 51, first married at age 22, born in Indiana, parents in

Poland.

. Edmund, son, age 13, born in Indiana.
