which, if taken at face value, means that her father was OENGUS, the
only recorded son of CARRACH CALMA. But since OENGUS died in 1017 and
GORMFLAITH's son LOIGSECH died very old in 1149, the chronology is only
just barely possible. Ban Shenchus 230:14 calls her the daughter of
Carrach Calma himself, which is impossible. All this has led to the idea
that "Mac Carraich Calma" was a surname or was otherwise used to
indicate a more distant descent. But in any case, it is generally agreed
that she was somehow descended from DONNCHAD CARRACH CALMA (RIN
9041).
On 22 Mar 1998, Luke Stevens
GEN-MEDIEVAL-L@RootsWeb.com (Subject: Laigsech Ua Morda to Carrach
Calma?) a lengthly analysis of the matter arguing that OENGUS was her
father, and summarized it with these points:
1. The chronology is aptly described as "possible, but just barely."
2. Since OENGUS had one daughter whose son died in 1123, she could
easily enough have had a younger sister whose son died in 1149.
3. The parallelism in the patronymics/surnames in the two pairs of
entries in BS [197:14, 198:8, 230:7, and 230:14] suggests that
GORMLAITH was in fact a younger sister of SADB.
4. If BS 198:8 had used a surname, the surname would probably have been
"Ua Carraig" rather than "Mac Carraig" as per the preponderance of
the annalistic evidence [see the notes on the sons of OENGUS].
5. Moreover, every indication is that the family was extinguished with
the death of Mael Ruanaid Ua Carraig in 1033, just 16 years after
his father. If the chronology were impossible and BS 198:8 were
actually using a surname, the father of GORMLAITH would have to have
been a son or grandson of OENGUS not recorded in any known source.
