He was the bearer of the crown at the coronation of King Richard II. He
was a member of the Council and was made Admiral of the West and
South in 1377, then, in 1386, of all England. Also K.G. in 1386. He
distinguished himself in the French wars, gaining a brilliant naval
victory over the allied French, Spanish, and Flemish fleets off Margate in
1387. He was made governor of Brest in 1388. In 1388, also, he joined
with the Duke of Gloucester in taking an active part against the King,
who was, at that time, entirely in the Duke's power. In 1394 he obtained
pardon for all politcal offenses, but was treacherously siezed on 12 July
1397, tried at Westminster, and beheaded in Cheapside 12 September
1397.
