Count of La Marche & Angouleme. Called "Le Brun".

Mentioned in Cockayne's "Complete Peerage" (EU, p.160-165).

One reference states he was Count of Poitou; engaged to ISABELLA

TAILLEFEUR OF ANGOULEME (RIN 786), but in 1200, when she was in the

care of Hugh's uncle, RAOUL COUNT OF EU, she was taken by his feudal

lord KING JOHN OF ENGLAND (RIN 785), who wed her at Bordeaux in

August. Hugh formed an alliance with KING PHILIP II K of FRANCE

(RIN 3163) against KING JOHN, resulting in JOHN's loss of his

continental possessions. Hugh may have married AGATHA DE PREUILLY,

but most references show he married Matilda, daughter of Wulgrin III

Count of Angouleme & niece of AYMER COUNT OF ANGOULEME the father of

ISABELLA TAILLEFEUR. [i.e., he married a cousin of his first fiancee]. It

has been claimed that Matilda was his 2nd wife and that his issue were

by a previous wife, perhaps AGATHA?

Notes

The "Crosman Family File" merely gives her first name - Margaret. Vital statistics compliments of Wayne Preston.

I located Margaret's headstone at the Cape Wolfe United Church Cemetery where she shares a headstone with her husband. It is inscribed: "In memory of John Crosman, 1799-1879, and his wife, Margaret Kinley, 1799-1875, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord - Godkin".
