gouty" and was King of Leon 995/999.
On 15 Dec 1997, Todd Farmerie posted the ancestry of TERESA ALFONSO
(RIN 2401) based on the latest research. This generation is confirmed in
that posting. Called "el Gotoso".
Regarding the identity of his mother, Farmerie posted a message on
20 Jul 1988, Subject: Vermudo II legitimate after all?, saying in part:
A longstanding question regarding the kingdom of Leon is the maternity
of Vermudo II. The young son of Ordono III, he was passed over for the
succession when his father died, the crown passing to Ordono's brother
Sancho I. Vermudo was brought into power at the head of a group of
nobles who were disfavorable to the rule of Sancho's successor, his son
Ramiro III. Vermudo married Velasquita Ramirez, but divorced her
following the birth of a daughter Christina (who would eventually marry
the son of Ramiro III) and subsequently married Elvira Garcia of
Castile, by whom he had, among others, his heir Alfonso V.
It has long been debated whether Vermudo was legitmate. Perhaps the
scholar who knew the royal families of the time the best, Emilio Saez
Sanchez, concluded that the evidence for his illegitimacy was wanting,
and that he was son of Ordono by his first wife, Urraca Fernandez of
Castile. This opinion passed into disfavor with the publication of a
paper by Justo Perez de Urbel, who cited a document in which Vermudo
names Gonzalo Betotez as a "grandfather" (ancestor). An analysis of the
pedigree of Ordono demonstrated that there was no descent which would
account for this relationship, nor was there among the ancestry of
Ordono's queen. This led him to conclude that Vermudo must have been
son of Ordono by a different mother, who was a descendant of Gonzalo,
and hence illegitimate. This opinion has been widely accepted by the
spanish genealogical community.
However, I recently came across a work by Ruben Garcia Alvarez which
presents an interestng possibility. He sets out to identify the
parentage of Queen Velasquita, wife of Vermudo. What he concludes is
that Velasquita was daughter of Ramiro Menendez, who was himself
grandson of Gonzalo Betotez. Thus the connection between Vermudo and
Count Gonzalo may have been through his wife (a usage not uncommon at
the time), effectively removing the only bar to his legitimacy.
In harmonizing the strong argument for legitimacy made by Saez Sanchez
with the "grandfather" clause of Perez de Urbel, this solution seem to
be better than either proposal alone.
