"William III of Burgundy-Macon, the younger brother of Empress
Beatrice's father, Count Rainald III, founded the line of Auxonne. His
sons
were Stephen II of Auxonne and Gerard I of Macon and Vienne. Stephen II
married Judith of Lorraine; their son Stephen III married Beatrice of
Chalon, heiress of another Count William (aha!) of Thiers-Chalon.
Stephen
III and Beatrice had John the Wise, Ct. of Burgundy, Chalon and Auxonne
who married three times and left three different families: Salins,
Chalon
and Arlay. His eldest son, by Mahaut of (ducal) Burgundy, was the Hugh
who married Adelaide of Meran, heiress of the county of Burgundy. The
Arlay line became the Princes of Orange."

It's [ i.e. this line] correct back to William of Chalon. See
*Europaeische Stammtafeln*, ed. Schwennicke, Band III, Teilband 3,
Tafel 433, where he's called William II and given no wife.
