In a blatant attempt to legitimize his succession to the crown after

killing Elizabeth's two brothers, her uncle, King Richard III, tried first to

have her married to his son. Then, after his son died, Richard to to marry

his niece himself ! She had, however, already become engaged to her

future husband, Henry Tudor, so Richard was unable to accomplish his

purpose.

Her marriage to Henry united the houses of York and Lancaster and put

an end to the "War of the Roses".
