Subject: Basset: Egeline wife of Gilbert B
"In an earlier posting I was agnostic on the identity of Egeline wife of
Gilbert Basset (d.1205) because ES does not give give her a guernsey. But
I was also wary because the VCH (Oxford) while referring to her does not
identify her as a Courtenay. However, in VCH (Bucks.) IV: 114 in the
discussion of Westcott hamlet (part of Waddesdon manor) it is noted
that the Courtenays held Waddesdon and that Reynold de Courtenay
settled Westcott lands on his daughter Egeline on her marriage with
Gilbert Basset. Gilbert and Egeline later gave these lands to Bicester
Priory (cf. VCH(Oxford) VI:21). This would make Egeline daughter of
Reynold de Courtenay (d.1194) and Hawise de Curcy (d.1219) lady of
Okehampton."
