Cokayne's "Complete Peerage (Despenser, pp. 262-266).

He held lands in the Midlands, the south, and South Wales. He was a

consistently loyal servant of KING EDWARD I and, more remarkably of

Edward II. His loyalty was unshaken even by the Gaveston affair. He was

much hated by Edward's enemies for his influence over the King after

Gaveston's death. One chronicler described him as a worthy man, who

was destroyed by his devotion to his son; but in fact he profited greatly

from the younger Hugh's meteoric rise to even greater power than his -

and in 1322 became Earl of Winchester. His unpopularity grew with that

of his son. He was strung high on the public gallows at Bristol in 1326,

vilified by the mob as a traitor.

It is interesting to note that when Hugh's lands were ravaged in 1321,

Many of those who participated were our ancestors: HUMPHREY DE BOHUN

(RIN 3629), ROGER DE MORTIMER (RIN 684), JOHN GIFFARD (RIN 1857),

MAURICE DE BERKELEY (RIN 4170), & JOHN MAUTRAVERS (RIN 3149). Some

of the lands which the King gave him were those of ancestors who had

forfeited them to the crown for rebellion, including JOHN GIFFARD and

BARTHOLOWMEW DE BADLESMERE (RIN 718).
