Per Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Derby, pp. 192-194), William was one of
the adherents of Henry, the young king, in his rebellion against his father,
HENRY II, of 1173. He sacked and burned Nottingham in 1174. Later that
year, he submitted to KING HENRY, surrendering his castles at Tutbury and
Duffield. He was taken by THE KING, along with other rebellious nobles to
France, where they were imprisoned at Caen. He became a crusader and
died at the siege of Acre in Palestine in 1190.
