Margaret.
Weis" "Ancestral Roots. . ." (29A:28) identifies both her husbands.
Footnote #1 on page 428 of the book "The Thirteenth Century", by Sir
Maurice Powicke states that John Giffard's wife, Maud, was the daughter
of Walter Clifford by a daughter of Llywelyn the Great. The footnote
does not, however, specify that Joan of England was the mother. The
"Dictionary of National Biography" also states that it is not clear who
Margaret's mother was. Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . ." (29A:27), states that
there has been some argument as to Margaret's mother's identity, but
that the editor has seen no evidence to convince him that it was not the
princess JOAN.
The identity of her mother was a hot topic of discussion on GEN-MEDIVAL
during October, 1999. The issue remains unresolved. In fact, none of
LLEWELYN's wives or mistresses can be absolutely ruled out as a
possibility.
