Stuart's "Royalty For Commoners" (85:29).

His brother, EUDES, succeeded their father as Duke of Burgundy. His

father-in-law, KING ALFONSO VI OF CASTILE AND LEON (RIN 2393) made

him Count of Portugal. He was able to consolidate his power there

sufficiently to allow his son to rule as king of Portugal. His descendants

ruled there until 1580.

Subject: Alfonso VI, Zaida, Elizabeth, etc. :

. "Teresa was married by 1096. Alfonso VI bestowed all of the

Portuguese lands from the Rio Mino in the north to Santarem in the south

to Henry in 1096, apparently in an effort to change Henry from an ally of

his cousin Raymond into his rival [Reilly, pp. 253-5]. This reduced the

territories controlled by Raymond in half, lessening his threat."

Notes

Weis' "Ancestral Roots . . ." (181:1) is silent regarding her parentage.

Some sources, e.g. Turton's "Plantagenet Ancestry," show her as a

daughter of Sigebert III, King of Austrasia (RIN 3709), but there has

never been a descent from the Merovingian kings documented to the

satisfaction of serious genealogists, and this is among those no longer

accepted.

Settipani's "La prehistoire de Capetiens" p.106 says (in French):

"In the 12th century, the Chronicle of Ebbersheim affirmed that

Bereswinda, niece of St. Leger of Autun [RIN 5544*], wife of the duke of

Alsace Adalric Ethic, was the sister of a queen. Chronologically, the

queen in question, who cannot be identified as Baldechildis, of humble

Saxon origin, nor as Bilichildis, daughter of king Sigebert III [RIN 3709],

could well be Chimnechildis [wife of Sigebert III and of unkown origin]."

Notes

On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of

Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph

G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no

sources. In that letter she wrote:

..."[Solomon and Lydia (Horn) Sawyer] lived at Falmouth, Gorham (in

1770), and Cape Elizabeth before going to Chebeague to settle. Solomon

was the son of Jacob and Sarah (Wallis) Sawyer who came to Maine"

The following is from "The Sawyer Family of Elliotsville (Piscataquis

Co., Maine), Descendants of James Sawyer of Gloucester, Mass. and Their

Kinfolk, The Drakes" 3rd ed, revised 1978-79, by Fred E. Sawyer (p.18):

....."Solomon Sawyer of Falmouth, Me., b.14 May 1728, Falmouth,

Cumberland Co., Maine, son of Jacob and Sarah (WALLIS) SAWYER, M. 16

Sep 1752, Falmouth, Me., Ruth BANGS, is said to have removed to Gorham,

Me., abt 1777.

....Children, birth place not determined: (Surname SAWYER):

.....(46) 1. SOLOMON, b. abt 1754, m. 10 Oct 1779, Phebe STROUT.

....Note - There was a Solomon SAWYER who m. LYDIA HORN 17 MAY 1765,

Cape Elizabeth, Me. He is thought to have had Ann who m. 1790 John

HAMILTON, and Ruth who m. 1794, Ambrose HAMILTON. This could be part

of this family. (Hist. Cousins & Little Johns Islands)

In his "General Index of the Sawyer Families of New England Prior to

1900", the same author, Fred E Sawyer, in 1983, asserts that Solomon

Sawyer married both Ruth Bangs and Lydia Horn (p.92):

...."Solomon, chr. Sep 1730, Falmouth, Me., s. Jacob, b.1687 & Sarah Wallis;

m. 16 Sep 1752, Falmouth, Me., Ruth Bangs. Ch. Solomon, b. ca. 1754, of

Gorham, Me., m. 10 Oct 1779, Phebe Strout.

....Solomon m. (2) 17 May 1765, Falmouth, Me., Lydia Horn. Ch. include:

..........Ann, m. ca. 1790, John Hamilton.

..........Ruth, m. Ambrose Hamilton. [our ancestors.]

....The Solomon Sawyer family moved to Gorham, Me., ca. 1770.

....Ref: Hist Cousins & Little Johns Island, Me.; Rec 2nd Parish Falmouth,

Me.; V.R. Falmouth, Me."

"Stone Sloops of Chebeague" (1949), chart p. 134, shows 3 children,

Solomon, Ann, & Ruth. Chart does not name any wife. Has note that he

"bought 37 1/2 acres on West End of Chebeague from heirs of Zachariah

Chandler in 1791.
