Notes

From "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations"

Vol.2, pp. 3-4:

Isabell was evidently a recent second wife of Lyonell, and not

James' mother (whose name is unknown).

James Chilton, tailor, was listed as a freeman of

Canterbury in 1583. He married, before 1587 just possibly

Susanna Furner, daughter of his step-mother [Isabell] and her first

husband Francis Furner.

Weis' "Ancestral Roots. . ." (1:21), does not identify her parents.

The identity of Agatha's parents has long been the subject of heated

debate. As of this writing, January 2000, the two most likely

candidates for her father are:

. Ludolf, Count of Brunswick (RIN 4032) and

. Jaroslav I, "the wise", Grand Duke of Kiev (RIN 1260).

. See the following notes for more details.

The "Dictionary of Royal Lineage" shows her as the daughter of HRE

Henry II (RIN 3421*).

On 9 Jan 1996, Todd A. Farmerie posted to

GEN-MEDIEVAL:

"The only source (if I recall correctly) that is not chronologically

impossible calls her niece, on her father's side, of Emperor Henry. There

are two interpretations. One is that this was Henry II, and thus she was

daughter of his only brother Bruno, Bishop of Augsburg (she could not

have been daughter of Stephen of Hungary, who married their sister, for

many reasons - chronology, succession, and the very latin word used

which is specific to a father's brother). The chronology for this is a bit

long, and Bruno is not known to have had children. The other option is

that it was a brother of Henry III. He had no full brothers, but did have

half- brothers (through his mother's earlier marriages), and one of these

(Liudolf) was old enough to be Agatha's father. This latter solution,

proposed by de Vajay, has gained general acceptance.

Another proposal:

Dave Utzinger posted to soc.genealogy.medieval

on 27 Dec 1996:

Subject: Re: AGATHA, WIFE of EDWARD the EXILE

"Just want to alert everyone to a wonderful article in todays NEHGR

(Oct 1996 whole number 600) re: AGATHA, wife of Prince Edward of

England the younger son of Edmund II Ironside and his wife Eldgyth,

where her much disputed parentage is "proven" as JAROSLAV I, Grand

Prince of Kiev, and INGEGARDE of Sweden."

Don Stone posted, as a followup to the

above, to soc.genealogy.medieval on 3 Jan 1997 :

Subject: Re: AGATHA, WIFE of EDWARD the EXILE

"Here is my brief summary of the issues relating to the parentage of

Agatha, wife of Edward the Exile:

. A definitive answer to the question of Agatha's parentage may be

difficult to obtain. De Vajay (1962) presents the case for Liudolf,

Margrave of West-Friesland, and Gertrude of Egisheim as her parents,

while Jette (1996) argues for Jaroslav I, Grand- Prince of Kiev, and

Ingegarde of Sweden. De Vajay's hypothesis makes Agatha a daughter of

a half-brother of Emperor Henry III, consistent with early documents

which specify that Agatha was "filia germani imperatoris Henrici," i.e., a

blood relative of Emperor Henry, but Jette believes that this hypothesis

requires an unreasonably tight chronology and that the absence of

mention of such a connection by continental chroniclers makes it

suspect. Jette also adduces onomastic support for his proposal that

Jaroslav and Ingegarde were the parents of Agatha (a Greek name), since

Jaroslav had an attraction to Greek culture, perhaps inspired by his

stepmother Anne of Byzantium; in addition, none of Agatha's children or

grandchildren were given German names, while two of her three children

(Margaret and Christine) had Swedish names. Jette believes that the

blood relationship with Emperor Henry may have been inferred by later

chroniclers from William of Malmesbury's statement that Agatha was

the sister of the Queen of Hungary. Jette's hypothesis makes Agatha a

sister of Anastasia, queen of Andrew I of Hungary, but a later queen of

Hungary was Judith, daughter of Emperor Henry III and wife of Andrew's

son Salomon.

. Jette, Rene. 1996. "Is the Mystery of the Origin of Agatha, Wife of

Edward the Exile, Finally Solved?" New England Historical and

Genealogical Register 150: 417-432.

. de Vajay, Szabolcs. 1962. "Agatha, Mother of St. Margaret, Queen of

Scotland." Duquesne Review 7:71-80."

Without getting into a lengthy discussion, let it be noted that, as of Jan.

1997, the participants of the soc.genealogy.medieval newsgroup are not

convinced by Jette's arguments in favor of the Jaroslav/Ingegarde theory

for Agatha's parentage and still feel that the Brunswick theory is the

most likely.

Dr. Ingham's article "Has a Missing Daughter of Iarosalv Mudryi been

Found?" _Russian History/Histoire Russe_ 25:3 (Fall 1998): 231-270,

was reviewed on GEN-MEDIEVAL on 15 January 2000.by John P. DuLong,

Ph.D. Exerpts follow:

. ". . . he continues his support for Jette's theory of Agatha's Russian

origin. Ingham goes beyond the important collaborative evidence of the

fresco in St. Sophia's of Kiev and the onomastic data he contributed in

his NEHGR article. He does an excellent job discussing how the various

theories regarding her origins being Hungarian or German may have been

derived from her grandchildren in Scotland and England and

misunderstandings of her relationship to the Queen of Hungary. I think

he also does a reasonably good job analyzing the problems with Vajay's

theory and showing how it is unlikely. In addition, I feel that he

overcomes the objections of Faris and Richardson to Jette's theory.

. His article resolved several issues that still bothered me about

Jette's theory. If you are following the Agatha debate, then you have to

read this article, it is a must. Although I agree with Ingham that

Agatha's origins may never be definitively proven, I would have to say

that Jette's theory is the one that has to be accepted for now until

further confirming or contradicting evidence is found. It is the simplest

explanation that calls for the least assumptions and mental gymnastics.

That is, if indeed Edward was living in Russia at the court of Yaroslav

when he got married, and he married a woman of royal blood, then why

not a daughter of Yaroslav?
