[I have noticed that census enumerators seem to have had confusion when listing the country of orgin for people born in Austria, Hungary, & Germany. Of course this was a period of political shifting in that part of the world.]
The 1930 census for ED 25, South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana (Ancestry.com image page 40 of 46) lists, at 728 Dunham:
. John Wallisch, renting for $15 per month, not owning a radio, age 43, first married at age 25, he & parents born in Austria, immigrated in 1891, alien, woodworker, automobile factory, not a veteran.
. Rose, wife, age 39, first married at age 21, born in Indiana, parents born in Austria.
Also at same address, but a separate household, Mike Pescara.
Following is John's obituary from 4 Nov 1963 edition of the "South Bend Tribune":
. John George Wallisch, 76, 0f 2806 S. Main St., died at 9:15 p.m. Sunday in his home. He retired in 1957 as a custodian at the University of Notre Dame. Born on Feb 28,1887, in Austria, he came here 56 years ago from Texas. He married Rose Kolndorfer on April 30, 1912. She survives with a daughter, Mrs. Susie Comestock [This is an error. Susan Comstock was actually John's sister - not his daughter - both were named Susan], South Bend. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today atb thhe Zahoran Funeral Home. He was a member of St. Stephen's Society of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the DFV German Club.
