. "'Linzgau' is still today the name of the region north of the Bodensee

(Lake Constance) . It was first mentioned 771 as ' in pago Linzgauvia' in

a deed of gift of the St. Gallen monastery. The father of Hildegard, count

Gerold, had many properties in the Linzgau, as well as in the adjacent

Argengau, Hegau, and south of the Bodensee in the Thurgau. After Count

Gerold's death, Charlemagne made Hildegard's brother Ulrich Count of

Linzgau and Argengau. Ulrich became the progenitor of the 'Udalrichinger'

which had their seat in Bregenz, Bodensee. If one accepts for Hildegard

the designation 'of X-gau' it should reasonably be 'of Linzgau'. . .

Hildegard is usually designated as 'Hildegard von Alemannien' in German

literature."
