. Letter dated 28 Feb 2003 from Robert E. Pierce, New Dominion, Cornwall RR#2, PEI, Canada, COA 1HO (a professional genealogist):

. "I have checked all possible sources, made inquiries with several colleagues, and can find no primary material that identifies the parents of Harriet Victoria Murray, the adopted daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Murray, of Lot 21, P.E.I.. The 1901 census indicates Harriet is their adopted daughter. In 1885 there was no formal adoption process, whereby a family would register an adoption, or apply to adopt a child. The family would have a very strict church upbringing and to save embarrassment the child would simply be taken in as their own. It was the practice of that time period. No records were kept by the government until well after 1900, and even today they are inaccessible. The French maid story to me is probably family lore, but in reality if Harriet was French she would almost definitely be Roman Catholic, and would never be raised in the Murray's faith. I believe that where the French arises is that Elizabeth Sellick was raised in an area of P.E.I. that is predominantly of French ancestry.

. As I indicated in an earlier email, the 1881 census notes a 14 year old, Matilda Crosssman, as living in the Murray household. Matilda is the daughter of James S. Crossman and Maria Crosssman (both were Crossmans) [Note that in the "Crosman Family File", James' surname is spelled with double "s" and Maria's with a single "s", but the spelling of this name in the 19th century could have been quite arbitrary] of St. Eleanors, P.E.I.. (source: Crossman family file, P.E.I. Archives). The Crossman family belonged to the [same] church as the Murrays. On Sept. 2, 1877, the widower James Spencer Crossman married Hannah Jane Corney.

. The 1881 census for the Crossman family makes no mention of Matilda, there are 3 daughters and one son. James dies in 1882 after an illness of 6 months. His obit says he leaves 6 children. Where are the other two daughters from the first marriage in the 1881 census? Maybe they were not able to get along with the step-mother.

. Matilda Crossman had an Aunt named Harriet. As was the second name of Elizabeth, Charles' wife.

. The Murrays liked to honor their British heritage by naming their children after English heroes, Nelson - Lord Nelson, Wellington - Duke of Wellington, Victoria - Queen Victoria.

. Unfortunately the 1891 census for Lot 21, the area in which the Murrays lived, is lost. It would have been interesting to see what that census said about the Murray household. In 1891 Major is married, he and his 20 year old wife have a child, but living in Lot 67. I checked the will of Major J G Murray, who died Dec 25, 1939, to see if any mention was made of Harriet. None.

. I suspect, but cannot prove, that in 1884-1885 the 17 year olds, Major and Matilda, gave birth to Harriet Victoria. I doubt if the proof will ever be found.

"the Crosman Family File", compiled by Dr. & Mrs. Wayne Preston, 1879 Falconer Ct., Vista CA, 92083 [Placed in 1992 at the Public Archives of Prince Edward Island], identifies Matilda as daughter of James & Maria. Source: Everett McKinnon. No vital statistics given. No spouse or children mentioned.

It would appear that Alice & Matilda were twins as 1881 census records say they were both age 14.
