two daughters, Zoe, and her sister, Theodora. Upon her father's death,

Zoe's husband, an aged senator, became emporer as Romnus III Argyrus.

He reigned from 1028 until his death in 1034. Zoe survived him, and at

the age of about 56, married her lover, who was proclaimed emporer at

his wife's entreaty and ruled from 1034 to his death in 1041 as Michael

IV the Paphlagonian. During his reign and during the brief reign of his

nephew, Michael V Calaphates, (1041-2), an accidental and insignificant

figure, there was much disturbance and acute miscontent in the Empire,

which ended in the deposition and blinding of Michael V. For about two

months, the Byzantine Empire was ruled by the unusual combination of

authority in the hands of Zoe and her sister, Theodora. Later in the year

1042, Zoe married for the third time and her new husband was

proclaimed emporer, ruling as Contantine IX Monomachus, from 1042

until his death in 1055. Zoe predeceased her third husband. After the

death of Constantine IX, Zoe's, sister, Theodora reigned as sole empress

from 1055 until her own death in the following year. She was the last

ruler of the Macedonian dynasty, which had occupied the throne for 189

years.

During the reign of Zoe's second husband, Michael IV, The capable

Byzantine general, George Maniaces, seemed well on his way to

reconquering Sicily, but was recalled to the capital when the Emporer

began to fear that he harbored much too ambitions schemes. Of note is

the fact that in George's army were the Varangian Company, made up of

the Rus, who are among our ancestors. The viking, Harald Harada was

also present.
