IMPORTANT NOTE TO RESEARCHERS:

. The book "Mansfield Genealogy" by Geneva A. Daland and James S. Mansfield, M.D., published by Peter E. Randall, Hampton, NH, 1980, is a history of the descendants of Robert Mansfield of Lynn, Massachusetts. It lists Henry as the eldest of 7 children of Henry and Hannah (Tuttle) Mansfield. It is noted that he (and also his brother, Edward) "died young" - presumably without posterity. This book has a section on "unrelated Mansfield families". Family number 7 is "The Mansfields of Jonesport, Maine", of whom they say: "Capt. Henry Mansfield came to Jonesport [Maine] from "She Big Island (probably Chebeague) in the early 19th century. He had two sons who were sea captains, Edward Augustus and James. . ."

Regarding the above note, when one looks at all of the censuses, it seems that Henry & Edward did indeed survive, move to Chebeague Island, and then further north into Maine, and raise large families. One small but powerfully convincing fact is that one of Henry of Chebeague & Thankful's daughters was named Hannah TUTTLE Mansfield - almost certainly the namesake of Henry's mother, Hannah Tuttle Mansfield. We know, as noted below, that after Henry died, Thankful went to live with her son, Edward Augustus, in Jonesport - the same Captain Edward Augustus Mansfield mentioned as being of an "unrelated" family in the "Mansfield Genealogy" book.

On 23 March 1964, in response to my inquiry to the town clerk of Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph Greely Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no sources. In that letter she wrote:

. ". . . The elder Henry was born in 1789 and married in 1812 Thankful Bibber of Freeport. She was born in Harpswell on Aug. 3, 1795. Henry died Jan. 12, 1871. After his death, Thankful went to Jonesport where she died Feb. 22, 1878. Henry owned property on Chebeauge Island in 1832. He was a mariner.

. . . An Edward Mansfield who may have been a brother of the elder Henry was also on Chebeauge where he bought land in 1831. He was married on Jan. 11, 1818 to Anna G. Waldron. I have no information as to where either of these two men came from.

. . . Some of Henry Jr.'s children died young, but of those who lived, several lived on Chebeauge and some owned property there.

The 1820 census for Harpswell Twp., Cumberland Co., Maine shows under the entry for Henry Mansfield:

. one male age 26-45 [Henry, himself]

. three males under age 10 [sons, Edward, Joseph, & James]

. one female age16-25 [wife, Thankful]

. one female under age 10 [daughter, Hannah]

. One person is described as being "engaged in agriculture"

The 1830 census for Cumberland Twp., Cumberland Co., Maine shows under the entry for Henry Mansfield:

. two males age 10-15 [sons, Joseph & James]

. one female age 30-40 [wife, Thankful]

. one female age 10-15 [daughter, Hannah]

The 1840 census for Cumberland Twp. of Cumberland Co., Maine, page 490 (Ancestry.com image 13 of 22):

. Henry Mansfield (b ca 1789, d 12 Jan 1871, possible twin to brother Edward) m'd 11 Oct 1812 at Portland VR 1786-1814, to Thankful Bibber (b 3 Aug 1795 @ Harpswell d 22 Feb 1878 @ Jonesport, Me.) dau of James and Joanna (Bailey) Bibber, both b'd Chebeague Is.

. From various Chebeague Island records we find that this Henry was known as a "stone slooper" or one that had a ship or "sloop" to carry stone from the various islands, to the markets in Boston or elsewhere. In an 1850 census Henry is shown as a 61 year old farmer, born MA and from other records we know he traded in land. At the time of this 1850 census his wife was shown as Thankful Bibber, age 56, born Maine. At the Cumberland Cty. Registry of Deeds, in book 406 page 150, Mrs. Fred Thomas found where Thankful (Bibber) Mansfield of Jonesport, (Washington Cty.) formerly of Cumberland Cty. gave Power of Attorney to Edward Augustus Mansfield. This was dated 26 August 1873. She went to live with son Edward of Jonesport after her husband died.

. Searching the records of the Mansfield family of Chebeague Is., Mrs. Fred Thomas and Nelson Wagner, have stated that Henry and Thankful (Bibber) Mansfield may have had as many as seven children. (Also records of K.T.P. confirm these facts.) This information comes from Portland VR and seems to tie into the Henry family, as follows:

. John m'd 27 Oct l847 to Irene M. Leavitt. An 1877 directory shows John as a mason.

. Samuel m'd 27 Oct 1852 to Adeline W. Pride of Westbrook. Samuel drowned at sea @ age 36 on 6 Apr. 1857. His body washed ashore on Bailey's Is. and he was buried on that island.

. Joseph W (d 13 Mar 1878) An 1877 directory shows Joseph W. as a harness maker @ 2 Cotton St. Portland. He m'd first Caroline Howe; m'd second 14 Oct 1858 Mrs Pamela G (Jordan) Hamilton, she d 17 Nov 1863; m'd third 20 Feb l866 Mary S. Elder of Portland.
