parents of AGATHA (RIN 1061), WIFE of EDWARD the EXILE of the English

Subject: Rurik Dynasty of Kiev; From Rurik to Yaroslav the Wise

"Yaroslav the Wise was absolute monarch in the Grand Duchy of Kiev.

He made the city of Kiev a metropolis, subject only to the Patriarchy in

Constantinople, organized the church, and codified the law. The duke was

supreme judge and commander in chief, but had to consider the wishes of

the Bojars (noblemen) and merchants. He went to war with the Poles,

dealing the Patzinaks a decisive defeat. The kingdom had its greatest

period of expansion from 1034-1054.

At the death of Yaroslav, the kingdom was divided among his sons.

Constant warring between princes gradually reduced the kingdom to a

loose confederation of principalities."
