Yarmouth, Maine, regarding the ancestry of my great grandfather, Joseph
G. Mansfield, I received a response from Katherine P. Tinker. She cited no
sources. In the hand-drawn chart that she attached to the letter, she
identified John and Frances as the parents of Ebenezer Hill. She had
annotated the date 1638 by their names. Frances' parents were not
identified.
J. Gardner Bartlett's "John Hill of Dorchester, Mass., 1633, and Five
Generations of His Descendants" (c.1904), identifies her only as Frances.
On page 201 of "History of the Town of Dorchester, Massachusetts", by
Ebenezer Clapp, Jr., published in 1859, there appears an interesting
incident. In 1665, "the Widow Hill" made a motion to the selectmen in
behalf of her son-in-law, lately come from Boggerstow, that "he might
inhabit amongst us." They could see no cause to grant it; neither widow
Hill nor any other person was allowed to entertain him, and the
constable was notified to warn him to depart the town.
.....On page 209, there is a list of the town of Dorchester's owners of
"Great Lots" as of the year 1668. "Widow Hill" is listed at owning 18
acres. This makes her the holder of the 12th largest of the 46 parcels
listed.
The LDS AF gives her surname as Tilden-Tileston.
