Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Segrave, pp. 605-608). Served in Wales
1285; in Ireland 1287; in Scotland 1291. Summoned to parliament 1296
to 1325. He was constantly serving against the Scots from 1297 to
1322. In 1302, when Keeper of Scotland, he was ambushed, severely
wounded, and captured, but was later rescued. Also was Keeper of
Nottingham Castle and justice of the forest beyond Trent. In 1313 he
was appointed Keeper of the marches of Cumberland; taken prisoner at
Bannockburn in 1314. In 1318 he was appointed a member of the Council,
to be constantly about the king [Edward II (RIN 1420*)], persuant to the
treaty with HENRY, EARL OF LANCASTER (RIN 3133). In 1323 he fell out
of favor with the king when his son, Stephen, allowed ROGER DE
MORTIMER, EARL OF MARCH (RIN 684) to escape from the Tower of
London. In 1324-25 he and his sons were sent to perform military
service in Aquitaine and Gascony. He died in 1325.
