I have no hard documentation, but it would seem apparent that this Gilbert was the son of Gilbert Shumway and Margaret and that Gilbert Sr. died and Margaret remarried to James R. Mansfield. Gilbert was raised by his mother and stepfather.

The 1850 census for Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts (Ancestry.com image 165 of 342):

. James R. Mansfield, age 33, cordwainer, he & entire household born in Massachusetts.

. Margaret F., age 33.

. James E., age 4. [as James & Margaret have a son, James, only 2 years older than this one, this James must be a relative that they took in.]

. Gilbert H. Shumway, age 12.

. James W. Mansfield, age 2 [James William Mansfield - public records verify him as son of James & Margaret.]
