Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Berkeley, pp. 129-130). Called "Thomas
the rich." Knighted bef 1322. He fought at Boroughbridge 1321/2, being
taken prisoner and held until 1326. In 1327 he was made Joint Custodian
of the deposed King Edward II (RIN 4240*), who was delivered to him at
Berkeley Castle. When he saw that violence was intended against the
king, he departed the castle for Bradley. He was later tried as an
accessory to the king's murder, but equitted. In 1328 he was a part of
the expedition against Scotland. He was Chief Warden of
Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, & Herfordshire 1336, Marshall of the
English Army in France 1340, Captain of the Scottish Marches 1342, and
Warden and Chief Justice in Eyre south of Trent 1345-8. In 1361 he was
on an embassy to Pope Innocent VI.
Thomas had a 2nd son, Maurice, from whom descended the Berkeleys of
Stoke Giffard, of Stratton, and of Pyll.
