Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Derby, pp. 198-203). Robert was one of
KING HENRY III's (RIN 783) chief opponents in the Baron's war of 1263/4.
He absented himself from the Battle of Lewes, but with 20,000 foot and
many horsemen, put to flight the royal forces near Chester in the Nov.
following. He was pardoned for his rebellion, but within a few months,
he rebelled again, joining forces with several others to devastate the
Midlands. In 1266, Robert was captured and was held prisoner for 3
years. His lands and titles were forfeited and given to EDMUND
(RIN 3156) the King's son to hold and to pass on to his heirs until such
time as Robert might redeem them for a sum of 5000 pounds. Robert
was never able to pay this sum and his lands passed to EDMUND's son,
Thomas, Earl of Lancaster (RIN 2859*).
