Death: Melbourne Ward Haws After a long illness, Melbourne was finally called home to His Heavenly Father this Thanksgiving morning, November 26, 1998, which was a blessing that I am sure he has desired for a long time.
He was a good father and grandfather as much as it was possible for him with his lingering illness. We are grateful for the blessing of his life and the time that he was allowed to be part of our family.Melbourne was born September 8, 1919, in Gilbert, Arizona to David M. and Glenna Hatch Haws He spent his growing up years in Colonia Juarez, Mexico where he attended school, except for two years which he was sent to the mountains of Mexico to tend cattle. When he returned he left Mexico and went to Pima, Arizona to live with an Uncle. He worked and went to high school there. At the age of 18 he was drafted in the military to serve in the US Army and was sent to California and put in a National Guard unit and with a very short time was sent to the South Pacific and was in the 32nd Division on the New Guinea Island for four long years in the swamps fighting to stay alive and serve his country. When he was finally granted a furlough he came to Arizona where he met his sweetheart, Verlene Buchanan. He finally was released after serving with the invasion of the Phillippines, and they were married in Phoenix. Then on the 13th of August 1945 they were married in the Manti Temple.
Melbourne had come home with malaria and jungle rot and his teeth missing from shrapnel wounds which he really never recovered from and is probably a big part of his illness which has finally taken his life and denied him much happiness with his children and grandchildren.
He and Verlene had three sons and one daughter of which survive him, Steven W. (Dona) Haws of Logan, Utah; Patricia (Steve) Perry of Sandy; Charles Haws of Sacramento, California; and Robert (Kellie) Haws of Phoenix, Arizona. There are 13 grandchildren as well as four brothers and three sisters who also survive him.
Melbourne has always been active in the L.D.S. Church serving in the MIA Scouting program as the Sunday School and Elders Quorums. He also served as a Stake missionary while we lived in Idaho and then in the Oakland Temple and the Provo Temple after moving to Utah.
He was loved by his family and very concerned friends who thought of him as a loving and always helpful and good father, grandfather and friend.
Funeral services under the direction of Walker Sanderson Funeral Home of Orem will be held on Monday, November 30, 1998, at 10 a.m. in the Timpanoges Park 7th Ward Chapel, 999 North 100 West, Orem, Utah.
