After Gertie's death, Mae lived with her brother Gene and wife Hazel.
January, 1945: "Miss May Alexander of Mount. Sterling and Dale Woods of Cantril were married Monday afternoon at the Christian Church parsonage in Keosauqua. Attendants were the bride's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Alexander of Mount. Sterling.
"The bride wore a powder-blue dress with a strand of white pearls. The single ring service was read by the Rev. Edna M. Fellows.
"Mr. and Mrs. Woods will live on a farm south of Douds."
They were living in Downing, Missouri when Dale died a few years later.
After Dale's death, Mae and sister Edna went to California and found work. They stayed with some Cavitt relatives. Edna became ill and returned to Iowa, but Mae remained in California for about two years.
After she returned to the Midwest she got a job in Roseville, Illinois. While working there Mae met Ronald Phillips. Dale grew up in Wyaconda, Missouri.
He joined the U.S. Navy in February 1945. He was assigned to a small boat organization that participated in the invasion of Okinawa. The group was then disbanded and Dale was sent to Guam and again assigned to a small boat division of the Naval Supply Depot to carry supplies to ships.
He got out of the Navy in March 1947, then met his future wife. He and Lee were married in a double ceremony with Lee's sister in Nauvoo, Illinois. He stayed in Nauvoo until August 1950 when he returned to the Navy one month after his daughter, Sally, was born. This time he was assigned to the USS Algol for the invasion of Korea.
In the spring of 1952 Lee and Sally joined Dale at Long Beach, California. In October 1954, Dale was transferred to the Recruit Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill. In July 1957, Dale was transferred back to Long Beach and assigned to the USS Merrick for 18 months. They lived in Garden Grove, California until January 1958 when they boarded a transport ship to the Phillipines where Dale was assigned to the Subic Bay Naval Station.
In January 1960, he was commissioned as an Ensign and transferred to Sangley Point Naval Air Station near Manila. In the summer of 1961, Dale moved to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. They lived on Ford Island in the middle of the harbor. Sally had to ride a boat to get to a bus to get to school. In October 1963, Dale was assigned to the USS Thomaston. In 1964 Dale and Lee adopted Lane and in October 1966 it was back to Pear Harbor. Here, Dale was assigned as commanding officer of a salvage ship, the USS Abnaki. Sally graduated from high school in Honolulu.
When the Navy ship U.S. Pueblo, a Navy intelligence-gathering vessel, was captured January 23, 1968, off the shore of North Korea, 82 Americans taken prisoner off the U.S. Pueblo. Dale was the Lt. Commander on her sister ship. He and his crew were able to escape. Dale was interviewed on national television following the incident. The communists attacked Pueblo with naval vessels and MiG fighter jets in international waters off the coast of Korea. One American was killed and 10 wounded. The prisoners were held for 11 months.
In October 1968, the family moved to San Diego, California. Dale was to spend a year in South Vietnam. He returned in December 1969 and assigned to duty in San Diego as the operations officer for the amphibious force, U.S. Pacific Fleet. until April 1972 when he was assigned as the executive officer of the USS Monticello. In October 1973, Dale was assigned as the Port Director for the Por tof San Diego for the U.S. Navy. He described that assignement as his most interesting and most rewarding. He retired from the Navy in August 1978.
He and Lee moved to Mesa, Arizona, where Dale liked to say that his most difficult decision after retirement was which lake to go fishing in.
He and Lee spent several summers traveling in a recreational vehicle. After Dale's death, Lee married Paul Hagen. They continued to live in Mesa

Emery and Gertie made their home in Van Buren County, Iowa and became members of the Cantril Methodist Church. Their first home was forty rods from the Des Moines Township Hall. Sons, Arthur and Wiley, were born there. They then rented another farm house where Edna was born. After this they bought a farm about six miles northeast of Cantril and had eight more children. They remained on this farm about thirty years, farming and raising their family of eleven.
The entire family loved animals and each child had at least one pe
At one time, Emery traveled to Oklahoma to visit his brother, Grant. He was thinking about moving his large family west. Emery reconsidered after the visit and the family stayed put. No one remembered the real reason they didn't move, but they did remember teasing their dad that he must have been scared by Indians!
The family worked hard to survive. Each child had his or her own chores both inside and out. They included tending the garden, hand washing clothes and hanging them out to dry, washing dishes, cleaning house, cooking and helping with the farm work.
They saved ashes from the fire to make lye soap. They soaked corn in lye water to make hominy. Meat was "fried out" and stored in large crocks and covered with lard.
Fruits and vegetables were grown, preserved and stored in the fruit cellar, an underground storage area in the yard near the house. They raised all their own food and never went hungry. Twice a week Gertie baked a dozen loaves of bread and every weekend she baked ten pies.
Farm work was tedious. Everyone looked forward to the weekend's pleasures. One form of entertainment was the "play party." Neighbors would take turns hosting the gatherings where everyone played games, danced, and generally had a good time. The Alexander home was the scene of many of these get togethers. As the children grew up, many hearts were won and lost at play parties.
Emery was a Democrat. Although he was active in local politics and worked at the polls, he never discussed politics at home.
He was a member of the Wiley School board of education, along with Charles Sheets and Bill Armstrong in 1908.
The children walked to Wiley School, a one-room school house not far from their farm.
The Great Depression took its toll on the Alexanders forcing Emery and Gertie and children Roy and Mae to move to a farm near Fairfield in Jefferson County, Iowa, in 1936. About two years later, they moved to a farm near Salem in Henry County, Iowa. It was there where they celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Stan had the mumps in February, so the anniversary was celebrated in combination with Emery's birthday May 8, 1939. It was the last time the entire family was together. Photographs taken that day of the couple and their children are extant.
On a cold January day the following year, Emery was walking along a country road near Salem. He may have been rabbit hunting or on his way to town to buy shells, when he was felled by a heart attack. He was discovered along the road and taken to a doctor's office by a passer-by. He died there soon after. Roy and Mae were still living at home at the time.
His daughters, Grace and Letha remembered the day of his funeral being what seemed like the coldest day of the year. Cars at that time had no heaters.
Emery and Gertie were both buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril, Iowa.
General Notes: Wife -
Gertie and Emery were members of the Cantril Methodist Church.
Gertie was stern in her convictions. She did not approve of tobacco or swearing. Emery enjoyed chewing tobacco, but dared not keep it in the house, because if Gertie found it she would throw it in the fire. Emery got into the habit of hiding his tobacco in a fence post. One day, sons, Gene and Roy, discovered the tobacco and tried it. It wasn't long before Roy became quite sick. Their brothers and sisters did not tattle and it was a long time before the folks found out what made Roy so sick that day! Gene developed a taste for it and the tobacco began to disappear regularly from his dad's hiding place.
Family and visitors were careful to watch their language in Gertie's presence for there was heck to pay if she heard them use a swear word. Letha remembered Gene teasing her one day and she got mad and called him a "damn fool". Gertie overheard and Letha received a spanking for swearing.
On the weekends when the pies were baked, they were placed on a shelf on the back porch to cool. The milk buckets were kept on the porch. One day when Gene and Wiley went out to milk, one of the pumpkin pies disappeared. The empty pie pan remained. The boys always insisted it was not them who stole the pie, but the girls never believed otherwise.
A year after Emery died of a heart attack, Roy was helping his mother move to a farm near Mount Sterling. They went to Wiley's home in town to spend the night. Gertie complained of being tired and laid down on the sofa February 27,1947. The next morning she was found dead, not having moved since she had lain down. Emery and Gertie are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Cantril, Iowa.
From the Clark County Courier 3-7-1941 MRS. EMERY ALEXANDER (NOTE: Her children insist her name was Gertie and never Gertrude)
Gertrude Cavitt Alexander, oldest daughter of Wm. C. and Mary Jane Cavitt was born Sept. 28, 1876, in Clark county, Mo., and passed away Feb.27, 1941 at the home of her son (Wiley) near Mount. Sterling, Iowa.
When a child she came with her parents to a farm six miles northeast of Mount Sterling, where she grew to young womanhood. While a young woman she united with the Methodist church in which fellowship she remained faithful until the end of her earthly life.
On February. 6, 1898, she was united in marriage with Emery Alexander at Keosauqua, to which union eleven children were born, all of whom survive her, namely: Arthur of Wyaconda, Mo.; Wiley and Eugene of Mount. Sterling; Edna Thomas of Milton; Leonard of Geneseo, Ill.; Stanley and Mrs. Aletha Scott of Bentonsport; Neal of Davenport; Ray and Mae at home. (Ray should be Roy and Grace was omitted. Grace would have been married to Foster Brewer by that time. She and brother Stanley would have probably had Galesburg, Ill. addresses.)
In passing she leaves besides her children mentioned, three brothers Jesse and Clyde of California; and Earl of Des Moines; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Avery of California; 16 grandchildren, several neices and nephews, and a host of friends. Her husband, Mr. Alexander, died Jan. 5, 1940. Her father and mother preceded her in death some years ago.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church in Cantril.

General Notes: Husband -
Gene and Hazel were married during the Keokuk Street Fair.
They first lived, as a married couple, in a rented house just south of Mount Sterling, Iowa, in Clark County, Missouri. They lived there for about one year, then farmed in Scotland Co., Mo., near Granger, for about seven years. Sons, Leon and Donald were born there.
In 1940 Gene was working on farms in Illinois. He stayed with Hazel's brother, Edgar, in La Harpe at night. About 1942, the couple and their two young sons, moved to the house where Hazel had been born in Van Buren County, Iowa, then bought a farm nearby. They joined Center Chapel Methodist Church.
To supplement their income during the 1950s, Hazel worked as a cook and waitress in restaurants including the motel in Cantril, the Bridge Cafe in Farmington and at the Bonaparte sale barn.
They owned and operated the Goodie Garden Cafe in Keosauqua from 1961 to 1965.They sold the farm in 1963, and moved into Keosauqua. Hazel was active in the Keosauqua chapter of Business and Professional Women. Hazel later managed the food department at Van Buren Community School from 1966 until her retirement in 1977. Gene and Hazel both drove school buses. For a few summers they ran the concession stand at Lacey-Keosauqua State Park.
When Hazel's younger brother, Edgar, died in an automobile accident, she and Gene raised his daughter, Wanda, because her mother's health was poor. Wanda remained with the family through high school.
Gene died suddenly at home at age 7
It should be noted that they never lived as a family in Lee County even though they were married there, daughter Connie was born there and Hazel died there. After Gene's death, Hazel moved to an apartment in Fort Madison in Lee County to be near her children, Don and Connie who lived there. Her sisters-in-law, Letha Scott and Grace Brewer also lived in Fort Madison for awhile in their retirement years. When her health deteriorated, she moved into the Montrose Health Care Center and eventually to the Fort Madison Nursing Care Center, where she died.
Eugene B. Alexander
KEOSAUQUA - Eugene Bryan Alexander, 72, Keosauqua, died Tuesday, February. 24, at his home.
He was born Sept. 2, 1908, in Van Buren County. He was a farmer until 1963. From 1961-65 he operated the Goodie Garden Cafe in Keosauqua. He was also a bus driver for the Van Buren Community school district for 13 years. He was a member of the Center Chapel Methodist church, Keosauqu
On Sept. 22, 1934, at Keokuk he married Hazel Sheets, who survive
Also surviving are two sons, Maj. E. Leon Alexander, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Donald Alexander, Fort Madison; a daughter, Connie Dobert, Fort Madison; four brothers Arthur, Wyaconda, Mo., Wylie (Wiley), Keosauqua, Neal, Alpha, Ill., and Roy, Jefferson; two sisters, Letha Scott, Keosauqua and Grace Brewer, Milton, and seven grandchildren.
His parents were Emery and Gertie Cavett (Cavitt) Alexander.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Center Chapel United Methodist Church, Keosauqua. Burial will be in Center Chapel cemetery.
General Notes: Wife -
Hazel was born in a small house a couple of miles south of Center Chapel Church.
Her first year of school was at the one-room Indian Creek scool in Van Buren County, Iowa. The next year, the family moved to Clark County, Missouri, where she and her brothers attended another one-room school, this one called Fair Play. The family attended nearby Bethlehem Baptist Church.
The Sheets family owned a "notionate" horse named Jessie, which the children rode to school. A teacher gave Hazel a child's glass pitcher and set of glasses for being the best speller in her class. She was left handed, which was unacceptable when she was in school. She always blamed her poor penmanship on the teachers' collective efforts to force her to use her right hand.
Hazel was tall and thin and loved to run when she was young. If there had been such as thing as track meets in her time, she would probably have been a champion.
Her family later returned to Iowa, then joined the Center Chapel Methodist Church.
The Sheets family was very poor. Hazel worked as a house maid and cared for the sick and elderly when she was young. She often described that time of her life as "working like a slave."

Jeff Goins' Story is found on Page 610 "Heritage of the Hills - A Delaware County History" by the Delaware County (Oklahoma) Historical Society, published in 1979.
He came to Delaware County with his parents in 1912.
The Kenwood School was located in the Indian church building. Dr. Harrington of Pryor stayed with Jeff and Ressie, who lived near the school, during their first year of marriage.
Later, Jeff and Ressie ran a store in Kenwood and lived in the rear of the store building. Jeff became a notary public and certified timber permits for Cherokees in the area who owned timberlands and were dealing with the National Hardwood Lumber Co. Later the lumber company bought up the timberlands.
A mill was built about 1919. By that time Jeff and Ressie's oldest child, Chester, was ready to attend school. They moved to Ressie's father's farm two miles east of Kenwood and remained there about 23 years. Nine of their ten children attended school at Kenwood.
They moved three miles south of Jay at the head of Rattlesnake Hollow where their youngest child, Durward, was born. Durward attended school at Jay. Most ofthechildren remainedin thevicinity of Jay
