W.A. Brinkley, 68, of Stem, Dies of Cerebral Attack
Victim Facing Murder Trial,Taken to Hospital in Unconscious State

A graveside funeral was conducted at Bullock Cemetery near Stem yesterday morning for W. Atlas Brinkley, 68, whose death occurred at 10 a.m. Saturday at Granville Hospital.
The Rev. W.E. Knight, pastor of Stem Methodist Church was in charge of the service.
Mr. Brinkley awaiting trial in Granville Superior Court on a charge of first degree murder in the slaying of his son, Earle, 35, in the early evening of Sept. 2, was found in an unconscious condition in his cell at 8 a.m., Saturday. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and death occurred two hours later. Hospital authorities ascribed death to cerebral hemorrhage.
County jailer Joe Pruitt, who found Brinkley on the floor beside his bunk, said other prisoners told him that no time during the night did they hear Mr. Brinkley complain of illness. Pruitt said he has checked the jail about 9:30 p.m. Friday and at the time all was well.
Pruitt disclosed, however, that Mr. Brinkley had eaten lightly on Friday and that at request of the Stem man, Mr. Pruitt had prepared for him a special diet.
The Stem man may have had premonition of death. He had sent word to a local undertaking concern for a representative to stop by when convenient, on a matter of business. He explained that he didn't want to be of trouble to anyone and he asked that his undertaking friends withhold the formation of any opinion in case until all the facts were known.
Mr. Brinkley appeared quite feeble and unsteady on his feet when in the court room here a few days earlier for a preliminary hearing.
Following a preliminary hearing in Granville Recorder's Court District,Solicitor W.H. Murdock of Durham, who attended the hearing said he would seek a first degree verdict when the defendant was brought to trial.
Mr. Brinkley was found in the early evening of Sept. 2 sprawled on the bed occupied by his son, Earle, Navy veteran and former newspaper reporter, who was dead of a gunshot would in the left side of his head.
At the hearing, Sheriff Roy D. Jones testified that in the several conversations he had with Mr. Brinkley after he was taken into custody the Stem man told conflicting stories of events on the night of the homicide. He said Mr. Brinkley first claimed the he had found Earle "that way" and later stated he had shot his son when Earle was advancing upon him with a butcher knife and subsequently, that the son was shot as the two struggled for possession of a shot gun.
Surviving are the widow, two sons, William Atlas Brinkley, Jr., of Stem and A.J. Brinkley of the U.S. Air Force, Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. J. Merle Tewksbury of MD, and Mrs. J.L.

SAN ANGELO ? Jerry Addis Bristo left his earthly body behind on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006. Jerry was born March 23, 1939, in Vernon, Texas, to Lester Sr. and Bess Bristo. Jerry?s life will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, March 3, in the Johnson?s Funeral Home chapel. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Friday, March 3, in the Eastview Cemetery in Vernon, Texas. Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Bob Bristo; and his parents, Lester Sr. and Bess Bristo. Jerry is survived by his wife, Claudette Bristo; daughter Robbin Gesch and son-in-law Mark Gesch of Round Rock, Texas; grandsons Justin Gesch of Austin, Texas, and Jordan Gesch of Round Rock, Texas. Jerry is also survived by his twin brother, Gene Bristo and family of Vernon, Texas; and brother Lester Bristo Jr. and family of Vernon, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Pallbearers will be Royce Burrows, Allen Gilbert, Jim Hadley, Tommy Haney, John Phillips and Frank White. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Kiser and Glenn Bolin. Jerry loved football. He was a successful player in high school and earned the honor of Junior College All-American while playing at Cameron Junior College in Lawton, Okla. Jerry went on to graduate from Hardin-Simmons University. He began his career as a teacher and coach in Lubbock, Texas. After several coaching opportunities, he moved to San Angelo to coach at San Angelo Lake View High School in 1967. Nothing made him happier than to have an ex-student cross his path and say, ?Hey, Coach Bristo ? remember me?? Jerry went on to work at San Angelo Lake View High School for 32 years. He worked 29 of the 32 years as a vocational counselor. He loved working with students and took great pride in helping them find success. Twice during his career, the Texas Vocational Guidance Association honored Jerry with the Outstanding Guidance Service award, the highest honor given to vocational counselors in Texas. Jerry also held many offices in state and local organizations. He was a true advocate for students. Jerry retired from the SAISD in 1999 and devoted his time to his second career in real estate. He began his real estate career at Hesse Real Estate. Sam Hesse gave him a start in the business and was a great mentor. Jerry showed his love in many ways. He was a good friend to many; he often went the extra mile to help others. Jerry was the owner and operator of the San Angelo Behavior Modification Institute and assisted many individuals who needed a friend without being judged. Jerry worked hard for his family and helped others, no matter their situation. Jerry was known as ?Pop? by his grandsons. He took great pride in sharing their life experiences. They loved being around him and hearing his life stories. We will all miss POP
