Willard Boyd, 74, died September 4, 2006. He was born November 4, 1931 to Willard and Helen Barr Boyd of Milton, Iowa. He graduated from Milton High School in 1949. On July 17, 1949 Willard was united in marriage to Eileen Roby. He worked for Iowa Power and Light for 35 years, retiring in 1984. He also worked at Des Moines University, retiring in 1999. Willard is survived by his wife Eileen, his children: W.C. (Lynda), Kathy (Mike) Stockham, LJ (Tammy), Mari (Jeff) Beal, Christopher (Tracey), eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, sister, Judy Martin, brothers, Charles, Ray and Ted. Services will be 1 p.m., Thursday, September 7, 2006 at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens. Family will visit with friends for one hour prior to services. Memorial may be made to the American Heart Association

Pauline Parks

Pauline Parks, age 90, of Mt. Morris, formerly of Milledgeville, died December 19, 2005 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 22, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at the Milledgeville United Methodist Church. Visitations were Thursday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial concluded the services at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her memory.

Mrs. Parks was born September 17, 1915 in Hamlet, the daughter of Leland and Mabel (Minteer) Boyles. She married John Parks on November 3, 1934 in East Moline. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Milledgeville Farmers Elevator.

Survivors include three sons, John (Marilyn) Parks of Milledgeville, Charles (Lois) Parks of Polo, and Raymond Parks of Rockford; and one sister, Eula Jean (Don) Peterson of Rock Island.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and two sisters.

Arrangements were completed by the McDonald-Allen-Grennan Funeral Home in Milledgeville

DURING LANDING THE PILOT WAS UNABLE TO DEPLOY THE RIGHT THRUST REVERSER. AFTER CLEARING THE RUNWAY, HE AGAIN ATTEMPTED TO DEPLOY THE REVERSER SEVERAL TIMES. ON THE LAST ATTEMPT, THE ENGINE ACCESSORIES FELL OFF LINE, AND A FIRE WAS REPORTED IN THE TAILPIPE. THE PILOT DID NOT RECEIVE A WARNING IN THE COCKPIT, BUT WAS INFORMED BY THE TOWER. THE FIRE CONTINUED TO BURN UNTIL IT WAS SUPPRESSED BY CFR PERSONNEL. THE ENGINE EXAMINATION DISCLOSED THAT THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT WAS SET BELOW THE PRESCRIBED ENGINE SPEED. ADDITIONALLY, NO.3 AND NO.5 CARBON SEALS SHOWED EVIDENCE OF ENGINE OIL BYPASS. THE RIGHT ENGINE OIL RESERVOIR WAS EMPTY, AND THE FIRE WAS CONFINED TO THE 6 O'CLOCK POSITION OF THE ENGINE. THE FUEL CONTROL WAS INSTALLED PRIOR TO THE FLIGHT DEPARTING LITTLE ROCK. APPARENTLY, DURING THE RIGGING PROCESS THE IDLE SPEED WAS SET TOO LOW, AND WHEN THE PILOT CYCLED THE THRUST REVERSER SEVERAL TIMES A PRESSURE DIFFERENCE EXISTED OVER THE CARBON SEALS WHICH ALLOWED ENGINE OIL TO PASS INTO THE TAILPIPE AREA.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this incident as follows:
THE RIGHT FUEL CONTROL UNIT MALFUNCTIONED AND ALLOWED THE ENGINE SPEED TO DECREASE BELOW IDLE SPEED (45%) WHICH RESULTED IN AN ENGINE FIRE. FACTORS IN THE INCIDENT WERE: THE IMPROPER RIGGING OF THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT DURING INSTALLATION, AND THE FLIGHT CREW'S FAILURE TO MONITOR THE IDLE SPEED BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DEPLOY THE RIGHT THRUST REVERSER.
