Snoda B. Addison Snoda B. Cook Addison, 93, of Mavisdale, died Nov. 6 at her home. Born in Cleveland, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Newton and Elizabeth Street Cook. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family in her generation. She was a faithful member of the Garden United Methodist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy E. Addison; two grandsons, Ricky Stanley and David Addison; one great-grandson, Brandon Keefer; two brothers, Edd Cook and Arthur Cook; five sisters, Bertha Horne, Bernie Horne, Stella Ratliff, Ida Martin and an infant sister Marie. Survivors: sons, Donald Addison and wife, Mildred, of Arcola, Joe Addison of Vansant, Leslie Addison and wife, Betty, of Forest; daughters, Meryl Woods and husband, Oakley, of Mavisdale, Elizabeth Andriuk and husband, Andy, of Centerville, Sue Swaim and husband, Mark, of Berkley Springs, WV; grandchildren, Steve Stanley, Teresa Carter, Carey Addison, Cindy Kearney, Melissa Hess, Shelia McDonald and Angela Brumbaugh; and 15 great-grandchildren. Surviving in addition to her children are Bill Cook, Jim Cook, Jack Cook, Perry Cook, Ann Cook and Nell Hurt children of her brother and sister-in-law Edd and Mary Cook that she considered as her children too. The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Nov. 8 in the Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Rev. Ray Amos, Rev. Paul McNally and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Burial followed in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Garden United Methodist Church.

Born at Page, VA., she was the daughter of the late John Silas and Alta L. Phillips Addison, Buchanan County natives. She was a member of the Levisa Assembly Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Otis Horn; three sisters, Josie Horn, Pearl Meadows and Ruth Tickle; and seven brothers, Theodore Ernest Addison, Duke Addison, Wilbur Addison, Burt Addison, Lee Addison, Robert Addison and John Addison. Surviving are her husband, Charles Duncan; three stepdaughters, Wanda Martin and husband James of Knoxville, Tenn., Sheila Dales and husband Billy of Garden Creek, Va., and Teresa Buchanan and husband Carl of Bristol Tennessee; two stepsons, Ralph Duncan and wife Connie and Bill Duncan and wife Kay, all of Moundville, Ala.; and numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren also survive. Born December 22, 1928 in Mingo County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles Duncan Sr. and Orva Carey Duncan.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Helen Hammond Duncan; his second wife, Viola Duncan; and one brother, Reford Duncan.
He is survived by three daughters, Wanda Martin and husband James of Seymour, Tenn., Sheila Dales and husband Billy of Mavisdale and Teresa Buchanan and husband Carl of Bristol, Tenn.; two sons, Ralph Duncan and wife Connie of Moundville, Ala., and Bill Duncan and wife Kaye of Oakmon, Ala.; two sisters, Alpha Hall and husband William and Rosaleen Lawson both of Delbarton, WV; one brother, Easton Duncan and wife Joyce of Delbarton; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 28, 2008 at Singleton Funeral Service Chapel at Cedar Bluff, Va., with Rev. James Hale and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Melba V. Aikins AIKINS, Melba V. ? Age 88, of Riddle and Tri-City, Oregon, passed away November 21, 2004. Melba was born in Riddle on October 16, 1916, to George and Sara Aikins. Melba served her country as a cook during WW II in Italy and the United States. After the war she returned to Riddle and later moved to Portland, Oregon, where she worked at Emanuel Hospital until her retirement. She then moved back to the Riddle area. She was a member of the O.E.S #114. Melba is preceded in death by her parents, George and Sara; two brothers, Lafe Aikins and Alva Aikins; two sisters, Janice Aikins and Elta Bond. Melba is survived by one nephew, Norman Aikins of Riddle; numerous great-nieces and nephews; two very special people, Ben and Shirley Horlings of Tri-City, who had been her caregivers for the last five years. A family service will be held on Friday, November 26, 2004, at the Riddle Cemetery. Mountain View Memorial Chapel at Myrtle Creek is assisting the family

Phyllis Matthies, 82, died March 31, 2009, at home in Santee, CA. She was born February 9, 1927, in Creswell, OR, to Herman and Fern (McKay) Close.
After WWII she married, Everett, WA, native, Walter Donald Finn and they started their family. When Walt died in 1959, she moved the family to California where she met and married Lawrence V. Ainsworth. Larry died in 1973. Phyllis married Darrell Matthies in 1977 and they moved to California, leaving Everett, soon after. They returned in 1981 and lived in Everett and Camano Island until his death. Phyllis was very well known in Everett, working at Filibecks Chuckwagon Inn for several years. She considered them family.
She loved her family, living with her mother, daughter, sons and grandchildren whenever possible. She loved to camp, shop, dig clams, and do puzzles, usually with a family member. She always wanted to feed you when you stopped in. Phyllis was a fantastic cook, loving all forms of seafood. She had a lot of friends and will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Fern; siblings, Leroy, Albert, Aileen, Dolly, Lois, Jane and Bud; son, Victor; and cousin, Christine.
She is survived by her sons, Walter "Mickey" (Kay) Finn, Robert "Bobby" (Sylvia) Finn, and Earl Finn; daughter, Candace "Candy" (Dave) Inman; ten grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.
There will be a private memorial in Santee at a later date

According to the town records, Austin was born on May 31st. His headston e, family bible, and subsequent records show his date of birth as May 30th, which is probably right. Austin moved with his parents to a farm in the town[ship] of Winfield, Herkimer Co, NY between 1792 and 1795. He married in the neighboring Co to Millea Day. After Milleas death, he apparently returned to Monson, MA to marry his second cousin, Lois Ainsworth. Immediately after they married, they moved to Eire Co, NY, then later to Herkimer Co, NY by 1820, where his father was living. He was living in the town[ship] of Winfield, Herkimer Co, NY during the 1820 U.S. Census where he is shown as being engaged in manufacture. His father operated a cheese factory, so this was probably where he was working. He then moved to the town[ship] of Virgil in Cortland Co, NY by Dec 1820, then to Peoria Co, IL in 1836, then to Hamlet, Perryton Twp, Mercer Co, IL in 1837, where he farmed the rest of his life. Austin paid taxes on the west half of the southeast quarter of section 23 in Hamlet, Perryton Twp, Mercer Co, IL from 1855 thru 1856. He also paid taxes on the northeast quarter of section 26 also in Perryton Twp. from 1855 thru 1864. According to the obituary of his son, Philander, they came from New York and lived in the vicinity of Monmouth, IL for one year, then moved to Mercer Co, IL. Both Austin and Lois were members of the Methodist Episcopal church and were highly respected by those who knew them. Both were buried in Corns Cemetery in Hamlet, Perryton Twp, Mercer Co, IL. I, Thomas Gilmore, was born on my father's farm in Chester Co, PA, Dec. 1 7, 1830 in a hewn log house. The older part of the house, built before I was born, was of rough unhewn logs, even the upper and lower joists were logs flattened on one side so as to receive the flooring. The other parts simply had the bark removed and the knots smoothed down with an axe. This part of the house was standing when my great great grandfather bought the place. My grandfather built an addition to this which was much larger. It had a stone cellar and was two stories and a garret high. There were four rooms below and three above with large closets. The logs were well hewn on both sides and between so as to fit together. The corners of the house were smooth and straight. There was not a plastered room in the house. The chinks between the logs were filled with lime mortor smoothed off even with the hewn sides of the logs. I use to like to sleep in the garret where I could hear the rain patter on the roof. In the older end of the house there were two rooms below and one above, the two lower rooms were as long as the house was wide and eight feet the narrow way of the smaller room which was the kitchen. It had a fireplace 6 ft. by 4 ft. high, where a copper kettle used to swing that would hold a barrel. There we boiled our apple butter of which we made many gallons every fall, while our family was together. In 1815 my father built in his early days, a stone barn 40 ft. by 50 ft. with three floors. For many years after it was the largest barn within two miles of us. All it's floors were of 2 inch oak and the timbers, studding, gates and partitions thru out were of first class oak. Shingles on all the buildings were oak. The doors in the new stone house were pine but all the old doors were oak. All the timber and woodwork of the buildings on the farm, excepting the doors in the house and window sashes, grew on the farm. Carpenters got 25 to 50 cents for 12 hours work.
When I was four years old we moved from the farm to Wilmington, Delaware in the spring of 1835, where father bought and ran the Black Horse Hotel (the sign had a big black horse on it) about two years, also bought five acres of land adjoining the hotel for garden and pasture.
Lived in Macomb, IL in 1908. Taught school most of his life. He was a devout Presbyterian and faithful church school teacher until a few weeks prior to his death. He was living in Macomb on December 17, 1930 when he celebrated the 100th birthday. The 1st Presbyterian church had a special service on Sunday December 14, 1930 to help him celebrate the occasion. There is a photocopy of his picture and several of his quotes as they appeared on the church bulletin for that service. An article which appeared in the Daily Journal at Macomb on Monday December 15, 1930; and a letter which was written by his daughter, Miss Arabella Thompson Gilmore, "Miss Belle" who is still living in Macomb. He is listed in the 1850 Census in the John S. Thompson Family as a Student.
