MCKENZIE: Services for Josie Lillian Carey, 87, were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 11, at Brummitt Funeral Home with Bro. Vance Rushing officiating. Interment followed in Everett?s Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Carey, a retired factory worker, died Saturday, April 9, at McKenzie Health Care.
She was born May 28, 1917, to the late Albert Blount and Emma Morgan Blount.
Survivors include a daughter, Ethel Hampton of McKenzie; two grandchildren, Bobby Hampton and Deborah Laudermilk; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Addie Lee Carey, and a son, Charles Carey

Stanley D. Petrie FORT DODGE - Stanley D. Petrie, 80, died Dec. 13, 2006, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City. He was born June 24, 1926, in Pratt, the son of Samuel D. and Clara Gessley Petrie. A resident of Fort Dodge, formerly of Pratt, he was a farmer and well driller. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Pratt. He served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include: two sons, David A., Pratt, and Danny L., Garden City; a daughter, Patricia Shippy, Pratt; a brother, Neil, Oakley; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Eugene Petrie; and two sisters, Marian Machtan and Bernice Dickinson. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Cario Cemetery, with the Rev. John Havens presiding. There will be no visitation, the casket will be closed. Memorials may be sent to the Kansas Soldiers Home, in care of Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary, Pratt

Came to Mercer Co in 1847 and lived with Ephraim in the 1850 census, and w ith the exception of a few years spent in the lumber districts of the north, has resided in Mercer Co When he first arrived he resided in Perryton Twp. His ancestors originated in Wales. He bought his first land in Section 35, Duncan Twp in 1851, principally for pasture, and did not improve it until 1857. Then he built a large, commodious house and barn, and raised fine stock and cattle.

Clifford Bonnett wrote on a piece of cardboard during a rest at war: A bit of his history before he went into the army.

Worked in a boat yard in Annapolis, Md. ,Eastport, Md. until Dec. 7, 1941. Worked at Dupont , Morgantown, WVa . Joined the U.S Army. Served in Europeuntil 1945., December 7 was discharged. Worked Arkwright mine as a mechanic, tipple operator, dozer operator, tub boat operator from 1946-1983. Retired.

"Arrived Normany, France on Aug. 10, 1944. Shelled St. malo Aug. 12. Moved to Brest on Aug. 22, 1944. Cities fell about Sept. 19, 1944. Arrived in Belgium Oct. 3, held first position on hill at Schonberg, 7 miles from St. Vith. Later moved to Seigfried line.

B battalion C.P. in Germany. Just before the Battle of the Bulge, the enemy fired off three V-I rockets, hit within one mile radius of our battalion. Day and night the Hienies (germans) threw V-I rockets at us. Some passed over into France. At night you could see the buzz bombs to over your head. We built nice underground huts, well furnished with the Hienies (germans) stoves. We were constantly shelled and under observation. We waited until it snowed heavy, or at night to do our looting.

Three days before the nazi (germans) came, the 2nd division pulled out and the green 106th division took over. On the 18th at approximately 0600 hrs. the hienies(germans) tore loose with artillery and started their drive. We fired and pulled out at noon for St. Vith, blew up our old CP and shelled Schonberg. As the tubes of the gun were almost up and down, I unloaded a kitchen truck, and left for Bastogne for ammunition. Returned the 3rd to St. Vith. Tanks were trying to cut the germans , they had already taken St. Vith, we did not know what happened to the 740th, it was dark and the german paratroops were droppoing in Bastogne.

Stayed all night at Bastogne at MP headquarters. Next morning we pulled out and the same day the germans surrounded Bastogne. I finally found the outfit,and they had lost nine out of 12 guns. From then on, I was guard on road blocks at Boullion and Clemancy. We had 2 hrs.on and 2 hrs. off for three days, 4 on and 8 off in zero weather. Arrived in Clemancy Dec. 21 and returned to Belgium jan. 19, 1945, same vicinity. Was in Luxemburg on Jan. 25, 1945. Back to Belgium Jan. 28. Started across Germany with the 4th armored division on Feb. 3, 1945. Went through artillery range at Grdlerwohr with the 11th army. In Linz, Austria, May 2, 1945, War was over and returned to Germany 12, 1945.
