General Notes: Husband -

"Horizontal! What kind of name is that?" a friend of mine once asked. I 'd never thought before that Horace Arnold sounded like that to anyone, and I thought it made a cute joke, but Daddy didn't really laugh about it when I told him. My Daddy, Horace Arnold Westmoreland, wasn't called "Horace" very often. Friends and relatives on my mother's side usually called him "H.A." (often mistakenly heard by strangers as AJ). Daddy's brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews, nieces, and old friends from Grover all called him "Bus". He said Grandmamma could really drag out his name when she called him into the house though. I can just hear it: "HOR-ACE! HOR-ACE AR-NOLD!" Daddy was the 12th of thirteen kids, the 9th of ten boys. I owe my life to my very persistent grandfather and my very strong grandmother!,-And a strong-willed Mother. Daddy met Mama where she worked in a drugstore in Winfield, AL. At that time he was an itinerate newspaperman. His skill was setting type, and he went from town to town looking for work. He would "hang his key" in a shop that needed a Linotype operator for a few days, work until they didn't need him, then move on to another town. He was accustomed to finding him a temporary girl, having a little fun, and moving on. It turned out that Ruth Taylor (sometimes called R.T.) wasn't an easy conquest. His cavalier attitudes won nothing but her reproach, and she became a real challenge. Bottom line was, he "passed through" Winfield several times, becoming better and better acquainted with Mama, her parents, and her six siblings. Finally they won each other over, she became his bride, and they moved to Lexington, KY, where he found permanent work, for a little while. He told Mama on the front end he never wanted to have children because he was afraid he wouldn't live to see them grown. He'd had a diseased kidney removed when he was a child, and he didn't trust the remaining one. (Neither did Uncle Sam, because this condition kept Daddy out of WWII.). Somehow, his mind got changed. By the time I was born, Daddy was working in Abingdon, VA Before Mama became pregnant with the twin boys, he had a real and permanent job with the Times News in Kingsport, TN, and that is where we lived from then on. Dan and Dennis were born two months before I was four, and Keith came along 19 months later. So much for not having any kids! Daddy lived until he was 77, and the kidney kept on working until his lungs finally rebelled against the cigarettes he loved. Daddy became a grandfather when my first child, Kathy, was born in 1963. I thought he was getting old-mid-forties at the time. This is when Daddy acquired the name he carried for the rest of his life. He always referred to his own Dad as "Papa", and I liked that. I taught Kathy to call her Granddaddy, "Pop". Within a few years he had other grandchildren, and he had somehow become "Pops". After that, everyone he knew in Kingsport called him "Pops". His friends called the house to invite him to a golf game, asking for "Pops". Even my cousins who had called him "Uncle Bus" all their lives picked up the name. From time to time, his name even appeared in the Times-News, before and after he retired, as "Pops Westmoreland". But, in my heart, he's "Daddy", to this day. My best memories are of walking along beside him, reaching up to hold his index finger in my hand. As long as I could hold on to him, I felt safe. He wasn't the Dad of the 90's, attending kids' birthday parties and listening to childish enthusiasms all the time. Sometimes he seemed remote and a little awesome. But if I felt scared of the world or anything in it, from one to fifty-three, I knew I could reach out to him, my eternal champion, and be reassured, consoled, advised, admonished, and always loved. Now, at fifty-nine, when I most need it and least expect it, he comes to me in dreams and helps me understand that I can handle anything. I am a Westmoreland!

Alexander Westmoreland married Anne Nipper and was the first of this family found in Stokes Co, NC,. He was listed in the Tax Records of Brunswick Co, VA, where it is believed he was married, and then came to Stokes Co, NC where he appeared in the 1790 Census of Stokes Co Alexander and Anne had at least nine children, some of them were born in VA and others in Stokes Co. One of his children was David S. Westmoreland. It is not known when Alexander died or where he is buried, although it is believed he was buried on the farm near Redband Creek in Stokes Co, NC There are a lot of his descendants still living in Stokes Co and some of them still own and live on part of the original Westmoreland farm. Alexander (Alex) Westmoreland was born in VA in 1743. He is the forbear of the Westmorelands in Clover, SC and Shelby, NC
