General Notes: Husband -

William E. White was born in Butler County, Ky., January 15, 1827, the son of Lewis and Nancy (Daughety) White, and twin brother of Oliver C. White. Nancy had six children, all sons, William E. and his twin brother being the only survivors. In 1830 Nancy and Lewis were divorced. William E. received such an education as the schools of Kentucky afforded in his youth. He resided with his grandfather Daughety, a native of North Carolina until the latter's death in 1835, after which he remained with his mother until her death July 4, 1854, in about her 54th year. She was a devoted member of the United Baptist Church.
When only a lad, in about 1840, William bought twenty-five acres of land from his uncle, William Daughety on the Indian Camp Creek, which he afterward traded to his brother. He purchased 180 acres of land adjoining the land he sold to his brother which he successfully engaged in farming, making the culture of tobacco a specialty. The next year after their mother's death, William E. and his brother erected a horse mill on the old home place, which they operated several years in connection with farming.
On August 9, 1852 Reverend James Howard married Margaret M. Snodgrass, also a native of Butler County, Kentucky and only 15 years old at the time and William. She was born June 3, 1836, and is a daughter of Christopher and Hannah (Embrey) Snodgrass. Ten children blessed this union, eight of whom, six sons and two daughters are living; Sarah E. Evans, Woodford H., Stephen A. D., Odecy C. Evans, Oliver S., Christopher M., John A., and Charles W.
On August 12, 1862, he enlisted in Company I, which was afterward consolidated with Company F, Twelfth Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry (Federal service). He was mustered into Company F under the command of Captain T. E. Noell at Munfordsville on February 12, 1863. A portion of the regiment was mustered into service on November 17, 1862 at Owensboro by W. B. Royall, Captain in the 5th U. S. Cavalry. Three of the companies were raised for the 38th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, which was consolidated with the 12th Cavalry in October 1863.
Q. C. Shanks, who was commissioned Colonel on October 11, 1862, resigned on February 14, 1863, and was succeeded by E. W. Crittenden, Captain in the 4th U. S. Cavalry, who was commissioned Colonel on March 14, 1863.
In June of 1863 William E. White was promoted from private to Corporal. With the exception of occasional skirmishes and scouts, nothing worthy of particular notice occurred until this time, when the 12th was assigned to duty on the Cumberland River border, under Colonel Jacob, Headquarters at Columbia, Kentucky. It was engaged in the fight with Morgan at Horseshoe Bend, and also at Marrowbone, on July 1, 1863. Joining in the pursuit of that daring raider in his march through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, the 12th had the honor of being present at his surrender to General Hobson in 1863, near Cheshire, Ohio. General John H. Morgan surrendered himself in person to detachments from the 9th, 11th, and 12th Regiments, Kentucky Cavalry. Having marched over 1,100 miles in one month, the 12th, after a short rest, struck tents, and on August 18, 1863, started for East Tennessee. It was at Carter's Station when the rebels evacuated their fortifications, and moved from that point to Athens, Tennessee; was surrounded at Philadelphia, Tennessee, and after three and a half hours of hard and desperate fighting, succeeded in cutting its way out, not, however, without considerable loss. It was here the brave Major Delfosse fell, and the fearless, dashing Captain Hill was killed.
On November 14, 1863, the 12th was in a severe engagement with the rebel General Wheeler, and, on the 18th, brought on the fight at Knoxville, Tennessee, at which place the entire Federal force was surrounded for 17 days, living on one fourth rations. The 12th was in the thickest of the fight at Bean Station, and being overpowered, under cover of night fell back on Rutledge, and thence to Blain's Cross Roads. On January 16, 1864, it was engaged at Dandridge, Tennessee; was ordered thence to Knoxville, which latter place was reached after a constant march of two days and nights, arriving without rations for either men or horses. On January 25, 1864, engaged Longstreet's command, and on the 26th made a successful charge on his lines. Finding the position untenable, and discovering that the enemy's infantry had cut us off from Knoxville, Colonel Wolford, commanding the cavalry, marched his Division through the Coves of Smoky Mountain, reaching Marysville, Tennessee, without serious loss. On February 3, 1864, orders were received to turn over horses and equipments, and to return to Kentucky. After eight days' march the 12th reached Lebanon, Kentucky, and received from Colonel Wolford permission to go home until March 7, 1864, at which time it was to rendezvous at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. There the regiment was consolidated into eight companies, to make room for the four companies of the 16th Kentucky Cavalry, which were transferred to the 12th. As a result of this consolidation, Corporal White was reduced to ranks. After being mounted and equipped, the 12th moved with General Stoneman in May, 1864 by way of Point Burnside, into Tennessee, and joined Sherman's main army at Varnell's Station, Georgia, and remained with the 23rd Army Corps until after the fall of Atlanta, having been constantly engaged in skirmishing and scouting, participating in the fights at Resaca, Kenesaw, Lost Mountain, Stoneman's Hill, and many others along the line. After the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia, the 12th was ordered back to Decatur, Georgia; and on September 14th was ordered to Louisville, Kentucky, at which place it was placed on post duty. From Louisville it went to Lexington, and thence to Camp Nelson, where after being partially armed and badly mounted, it was ordered to move with General Burbridge on his second Saltville raid. Joining General Stoneman's command in Tennessee, it was with that gallant officer at the capture of Salisbury, North Carolina, and was intrusted by him with very important and hazardous duties, which were performed to his entire satisfaction and greatly to the credit of Major Harrison, who commanded the regiment at that time. On May 16, 1865, William E. White was once again promoted to the rank of Corporal. Returning from Tennessee, the 12th was stationed on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad to protect it against guerrillas. In Louisville, Kentucky, on the 23rd of August, 1865, Corporal W. E. White, along with all the enlisted men of Company F were mustered out, having received the very highest praise from all of the officers with whom it had served, for valor, daring, prompt and efficient discharge of duties, and high soldierly bearing.
The 12th participated in the following other battles in which loss was sustained, viz; Horseshoe Bend, Paducah, and Brandenburg, Kentucky; Marion, Virginia; Big Creek Gap, Philadelphia, Knoxville, Bean's Station, Blain's Cross Roads, and Dandridge, Tennessee; Buffington Island, Ohio; Kenesaw, Lost Mountain, and Atlanta, Georgia, and Salisbury, North Carolina.
Mr. White and wife were members of the Baptist Church, in which he held various official positions. Politically he was a Republican.1 William and Margaret had 8 children:
