Howard Foster recalled seeing Robert Lee Westmoreland only once, when he was
perhaps about six years old. While at Cale, AR at a blacksmith shop where a
horse was being shod, a man rode up and spritely dismounted from his nag and
said to someone, "the name is Westmoreland". Howard learned his identity at
that time. Howard believes that he was the time back at Cale on a visit from
Texas.

Virginia (Sloan) Westmoreland Virginia Arlene Sloan Westmoreland Ms. Westmoreland, 81, of Huntersville, NC, died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. She was born May 22, 1922 in Rowan County, NC, to the late Arlee Watson and Sallie Ketner Sloan. Arlene was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church, a graduate of Landis High School, Class of 1940 and the Lowrance Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1942. Nursing and taking care of other people were her life. Survivors include her sons, Robert Y. Westmoreland and wife Margaret P. of Huntersville, NC and Thomas H. Westmoreland of Rocky Ford, CO, brothers, Ben Sloan of Rockwell, NC and Earl Sloan of Kannapolis, NC, sisters, Freida S. Stengal of Cedarburg, WI, and Thelma S. Archer of China Grove, NC, five grandchildren, Tracey Gladish, Scott Westmoreland, Philip Westmoreland, Jamey Westmoreland and Sarah Westmoreland, and one great-grandchild, Caitlyn Westmoreland. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at Ramah Presbyterian Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. following the graveside service at Ramah Presbyterian Church with Rev. Phil Hargrove and Rev. Linda Smith officiating. Harry A. Sloop MOORESVILLE -- Harry A. Sloop, 85, Linwood Road, died Friday (March 26, 2004) at his home.

Born Jan. 19, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Sloop was a son of the late Ralph A. and Ida Rice Sloop. He retired as a supervisor from Burlington Industries.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in 7th Armored Division. He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie Westmoreland Sloop.

Survivors include sons Harry A. Sloop Jr., Mooresville, and Thomas Ralph Sloop, San Diego, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnny C. Cozart. Burial at Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation:1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday at the church's Family Life Center. At other times, the family will be at the home on Linwood Road.

Raymond McCain "Westy" Westmoreland, 89, of 209 Brenda Drive, Converse, Texas, died March 23, 2002.

A native of Greer, he was a son of the late M.M. and Eva Poole Westmoreland, and was a retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant and a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Surviving: Wife, Hurene Smart Westmoreland, of the home; two daughters, Betty Adams of Polston, Montana, and Sue Hubbard of San Antonio, Texas; one son, Ted Westmoreland, of Whitesboro, Texas; one brother, Hugh Westmoreland, of Greer; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Westmoreland was predeceased by a brother, Roy Westmoreland; and two sisters, Merle Liles and Lois Westmoreland.

Graveside service: 2 p.m. Thursday at Wood Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Virgil Smith.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, before the service, at the mortuary.
