McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Vollie Louise Baker, 76, died April 10 at her home after a lingering illness.

A retired Genesco employee and a member of the Baptist Church, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Eston and Daisey Yates Simmons; and was preceded in death by daughter, Charlene Baker; sister, Martha Walker; and brothers, Roy H. and Larry Junior Simmons.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Raymond Pack of Spencer, Linda and Allen Prater Jr., Doris and Tommy Gilley, all of McMinnville; sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie and Diane Tipton of Biloxi, Miss., Stephen A. Simmons of McMinnville, John Anthony and Darlene Baker of Spencer; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lydia Guy of Spencer, Bessie Mooneyham of Mooneyham community, Daisey Mae Komer of Mecosta, Mich., and Rose Lewis of McMinnville; and brother, James Ernest Simmons of Spencer.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at High's Chapel with Billy G. Nunley officiating. Burial will follow at Town Cemetery in Van Buren County. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at High's.

High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Talented quilter. Descendants of her children as well as her nieces still possess quilts that she made. She stored her quilting frame near the ceiling of her living room and lowered it with a rope pulley.

Researcher's note: Although her obituary lists her plce of birth as Oklahoma there is evidence to the contrary. Texas is listed as her place of birth on the 1900-1930 censuses.

Alva Simpson Services to Be Held Tuesday
Mrs. Alva Simpson, 84, of 804 West 13th Street died in Fannin County Hospital at 5:15AM Monday.

Funeral services will be held at the Central Baptist Church at 2PM Wednesday with the Rev. Joe Patterson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove with Wise Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Simpson was born in Oklahoma February 11, 1888, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Watkins. She had lived most of her life in Fannin County in the Honey Grove, Windom and Bonham area. She was the widow of Monroe Simpson.

She was a member of the Central Baptist Church.

Survivors are seven sons, Virgil Shelton of Dallas, Noah Shelton of Bonham, Charlie Simpson of Houston, Monroe Simpson Jr. of Honey Grove, William D. Simpson of Corpus Christi, Lev Simpson of Irving and Childs E. Simpson of Altus, Oklahoma; one daughter Mrs. Ethel Hill of Fort Worth, 26 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
