Life stories: Susan Shaw posted November 27, 2002 Susan F. Shaw of Columbia died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Boone Hospital Center. She was 89. Mrs. Shaw was born Dec. 6, 1912, in Ray County to Pomeroy and Dorcey Alice Miller VanTrump. She graduated from Liberty High School and attended William Jewell College before coming to MU. On May 20, 1934, she married Kenneth Davis in Liberty. After his death, she married Russell Shaw in Columbia on Dec. 19, 1947. He also died earlier. An avid bowler, Mrs. Shaw was a member of the Columbia Womens Bowling Association and the Columbia Bowling Hall of Fame. Mrs. Shaw worked at the Missouri Historical Society and Christian College, now Columbia College. She was an early board member of Pinnacles Youth Foundation and was also a 4-H leader. Mrs. Shaw is survived by a son, James R. Shaw of Columbia; a daughter, Suellen Davis Wells of Lake Ozark; a brother, William VanTrump of Kerrville, Texas; and four grandchildren. A son and two brothers died earlier. Visitation for Mrs. Shaw will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to First Christian Church, 101 N. Tenth St., or the Pinnacles Youth Foundation, Boone County Extension Office, Route UU, Columbia, Mo. 65201.

According to Claude's oibtuary in the Clark County Courier, March 31, 1944, he was found dead in bed Saturday morning, Feb. 14. Luray, Missouri, of heart problems. He was buried at Combs Cemetery, Luray, Clark County, Missouri.

Claude Edgar Sheets (Keosauqua, Ia., Republican) Claude Edgar Sheets, son of Edgar and Helen Sheets was born Feb. 14, 1944, and slipped quietly away Saturday, March 11, not quite one month old.

Besides his parents, he leaves one sister, Hazel Rosalee, who will be three in June.

Mr. and Mrs. Byron Overhulser of LaHarpe, Ill. parents of Mrs. Sheets and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Sheets of Mt. Sterling, mourn the passing of their little grandson. There are also three uncles and five aunts who with their families and other realtives and friends mourn their loss.

Clark County Courier March 31, 1944 Sheets infant interned at Luray Funeral services for Claude Edgar Sheets, one month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Sheets of Mt. Sterling,Iowa, were held Mondy afternoon, March 13, at the Mt. Sterling Methodist Church,in charge of the Rev. Edna Fellows. Burial was at the Luray, Missouri, Cemetery.

When he was a young man, Henry Edgar Sheets and his brother, Charley, were lumberjacks (Henry was listed as a sawyer in the 1900 Vernon Twp., Van Buren County census). Henry was known as "Bisquit" because he always cooked breakfast for the other loggers.
After his days as a lumber jack came to an end, Henry made his living as a farmer, painter and wall paper hanger. He was tall and thin and nearly always wore a mustache as an adult.
The family moved to Clark County, Missouri about 1916 (barely south of the state line dividing Iowa and Missouri). Henry joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1926. The children rode a horse named Jessie to school.
Henry was remembered as a kind and loving father, who would defend his family and property when it was necessary.
He joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church in 1926.
Henry suffered a stroke in 1940 and was a semi-invalid until his death. Henry and Rose are buried at Center Chapel Church in Van Buren County, Iowa. Rosabel lived in Van Buren County except for the 17 years the family lived in Missouri about 10 miles south of Mount Sterling. While in Missouri, the family belonged to the Bethlehem Baptist Church near Luray. The family returned to Mount Sterling, Iowa, in 1943.

Henry E. Sheets

Henry E. Sheets eldest son of Frank and Harriet Hurst Sheets was born August 5, 1871, near Mt. Sterling, Iowa, and passed away in his home at Mt. Sterling, Tuesday evening at the age of 73 years and 24 days. He grew to manhood on his father's farm near Mt. Sterling. He engaged in various pursuits being especially successful in painting and paper hanging.

Sept. 23, 1903, he was united in marriage to Rose B. Watkins (correctly Rosabel) at her parent's home in Willits, Iowa. To this union were born three children, Leonard L. Sheets, Mrs. Hazel Alexander, and Edgar T. (correctly Franklin) Sheets, all of Mt. Sterling vicinity. The mother and three children survive the father and husband. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Edgar Leon and Donald Gene Alexander and Hazel Rosalee Sheets; three brothers and three sisters, Chas. of near Keosauqua, Mrs. Ruie Eberhard of Spokane, Wash., Anna Linn of Mt. Sterling, Elza of Milton,Iowa, Harlan of Brookfiled, Mo., and Mrs. Edith Myers of Albany, Ore., and a number of other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, a sister, Lizzie, a half sister, Mrs. Effie (correctly Etta) Hewitt, and a little grandson, Claude Edgar Sheets.

Mr. Sheets became a Christian in 1926 and united with the Bethlehem Baptist Church. He was a genial disposition and loved to have a his friends visit with him.

On Dec. 7,194, he was stricken with paralysis of the nerves and since that time has been a semi-invalid and at times during the past months a great sufferer.

Fuenral services were held Agust 31 at Mt. Sterling Methodist church, Rev. Edna M. Fellows officiating. Interment at Center Chapel. Pallbearers, Cyrus Kingsbury, Dale Zollars, Gerorge Gares, Elmer Tyalor, Orrie Shannon and A.M. Kendall. (The name A.M.Kendall has been marked out and the name W. Alexander added.) The Life Story of Rosabel Watkins Sheets Van Buren County Register

Rosabel Watkins (Sheets), youngest child of John and Ann Evans Watkins was born Aug.8, 1881, and passed away April 24, 1957 at the Van Buren Memorial Hospital after a short illness. The funeral services were held at the Mt. Sterling Methodist church on April 27,1957.

She joined the Center Chapel Methodist church at an early age, and later transferred her membership to the Bethlehem Baptist church near Luray, M

On Sept. 23, 1903 she married Henry E. Sheets of Mt. Sterling, Iowa. To this union three children were born: Leonard Leon, Hazel Mae and Edgar Franklin. She has spent all the years of her life in Van Buren County except for the 17 years she and her husband and children lived in Missouri, about 10 miles south of Mt. Sterling, Iowa.

She and her husband and oldest son Leonard moved to Mt. Sterling in 1943. There her husband passed away Aug. 29, 1944. She and her son, Leonard, continued to make their home in Mt. Sterling until her recent illness and death.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her children, Leonard at home, Mrs. Hazel Alexander and her husband, Gene of near Mt. Sterling, and Edgar and his wife, Helen, who reside in Alexandria, Mo. Also five grandchildren, Leon Alexander, attending school (college) at Iowa City; Donald Alexander, Chicago,Ill; Connie Alexander and Rosalie and Wanda Sheets. One grandchild, Claude Edgar Sheets died in infancy, March 11, 1944. She was the last surviving member of her family of nine. She also leaves four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, many nephews and nieces and a host of friends.

She was a kind and loving mother and a true friend to all who knew her. She attended church as long as her health permitted and the Bible was a constant comfort to her
