Story of Bob Berganders life that was presented at his memorial service. Robert Bruce Bergander 1919-1991
Bob was born on a small farm in Wisconsin, of December 9, 1919. His mot her Donnah was from Nebraska; his father Frank was from Kiel, Germany.
Bob grew up during the depression, playing football ( fullback and team captain), lifting weights with his older brother Ron, and playing the tuba. He would fondly remember his small town youth. In Bob's own words:
Determined to get an education, I had gone to LaCrosse College in 1938. In debt and unable to go back to school, I took a job as a $12 a week clothing salesman. I decided that if I couldn't get back to college, the Air Corps might be a way to get an education. I joined up in 1940 at Chanute Field, IL, to study aircraft mechanics."
"In boot camp I met B.J. Smith from Chicago. We became good friends and I would go home with "Smitty" and double date with friends of his girlfriend, Ora. One weekend Smitty invited me to Chicago to meet Ora's 17 year old sister. It was a meeting that was to shape my whole life."
Bob and Hankie were married in 1942. After 9 days of marriage, Bob's outfit was shipped out to England. He would not see his wife for over 3 years.
The 27th Fighter Squadron flew P-38 Lightings. As aFlight Engineering Chief, Bon directed engine crews on bases in Algeria, Tunisia, Sardinia, Corsica, and Italy. In 1944 Bob received the Bronze Star, the citation reads in part:
For meritorious service in support of military operation against the enemy. Sergeant Bergander's innovations have contributed greatly to the combat efficiency of his unit."
One of these innovations was to successfully combine the salvageable parts of four wrecked aircraft to make two combat ready planes -- and this task was completed in just one week's time.
Leaving the service in 1945, Bob went back to college, graduating from Rider College, NJ, in 1948.
Bob worked for the Air Force as an instructor at Chanute Air Field. In 1957 he joined the Martin Company in Denver, Arapaho Co, CO, working on the Titan ICBN missile program. He was the supervisor of Customer Techical Training. In 1967, Bob advanced to the SUB SIG Division of the Raytheon Company in Portsmouth, RI. He would retire from Raytheon in 1981 as the Training and Benifits Manager.
Over the years, Bob contributed his time to a number of community organizations, most notably with his son Dan in Junior Achievment and his son Don in Boy Scouts.
Retirement would give Bob more time for reading, his art (charcoal drawings, sculpting,and plaque casting)and traveling. Bob and Hankie used their RV to see most of the country, visiting friends and relatives along the way. Bob especially enjoyed his fighter group reunions, which renewed many old friendships.
The long term goal in Bob's life was to acquire a place of his own on the water where he could fish and observe nature. He reached that goal! A beautiful home in Leesburg, Florida -- water on two sides, wildlife everywhere, and a brand new boat to go fishing in.
Bob would overcome several health problems in his life and would face his final illness with his optimism, courage, dignity, and sense of humor.
Everyone has their own memories of Bob, but what most people seem to remember is his smile -- it will be missed
