OBITUARY THE ONAGA HERALD 16 MARCH 1978
Graveside services for Mrs. Vivian Rose Rice, 52, of Topeka, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Onaga cemetery. Earlier services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral home in Topeka.
Mrs. Rice died Monday in a Topeka hospital where she had been a patient since February 24. She had cancer.
She was born December 29, 1925 at Onaga and lived in Topeka 21 years. She was a housekeeper at the 7-C Motel since 1969. She was a member of Quivera Heights Church of Christ and Parents without Partners.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Trudy Doherty, Cullen Village, Mrs. Cindy Reilly, South Fulton, Tenn., Mrs. Patricia Simpson and Mrs. Susan Snodgrass, both of Topeka; her mother, Mrs. Anna Force of Topeka; her father, Merle Randall of Onaga; a sister, Mrs. Maxine Blanchard of Blackwell, Okla., and five grandchildren

The Mina Rarick born to them in 1870 died as an infant. This information is from a letter written by Mina's brother, my g-grandfather, Frank Rarick in 1938. I believe the Bertha listed as the wife of John R. Evans in the 1900 census is the younger sister of Altha D. Spencer, wife of Edwin Rarick (Frank's brother). In the 1880 census for Kalamo, Eaton Co., MI there is an Asher Spencer listed on pg. 255A who has a daughter, Bertha A., age 9, who is likely the Bertha married to John R. Evans in 1900. The family listed right after Asher Spencer is Edwin Rarick and his wife, Altha, and their two sons, one of whom is Fred S. Rarick, age 1. This is the Fred Rarick living with John and Bertha Evans in 1900. The 1900 census lists him as "nephew" which confirms that his mother was a sister to Bertha. I hope this helps clear up any confusion and places Bertha in the correct family.

SD Birth Records say Either Sjolie or Ljolie as Maiden Name 1. From an interview with Hazel Rarick Smith by Linda Hawes Hartanov, 1987 : Aunt Julia was of Norwegian descent and was a very talkative woman. I remember when my mother died and Aunt Julia came out to California to help my father. She and I slept in the same room for a short time and I remember that she was talking when I fell asleep and was talking when I woke up! She was very worried about my father after Rachel died and so she was really instrumental in making a match between my mother and father. A young man who attended the same church as my mother in New York was visiting family in South Dakota. Julia asked him if he knew of a middle-aged spinster who would be willing to help a widower with four daughters and he thought of my mother and said he just might know of someone. My father corresponded with my mother and then put on his 'Sunday Best' and travelled to New York to court her. She accepted his proposal and married him. 2. "Aunt Julia" sent a telegram to my parents, Owen and Phyllis Hawes Paulson, on their wedding day, wishing them well and encouraging them to follow the Lord in their marriage and lives.[CH] 3.
