OBITUARY January l, l976 James Jefferson Ward, 66, of l40l Piedmont Park Road, a retired line cr ew foreman with Duke Power Co., died today. A native of Greenville, a son of the late Cicero and Letha Gilbert Ward, he lived all of his life in Greenville, served with the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of Piedmont Park Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clara Howard Ward; two daughters, Mrs. Ann Ward Williams of Melbourne, Florida and Mrs. Kay Ward Chastain of Easley; three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Ward Lister and Mrs. Annie Ward Kestner of Greenville, and Mrs. Winnie Ward Watson of Taylors, a brother, Monroe Ward of Greenville; and two grandchildren. Services will be Saturday at a place and hour to be announced. The body is at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P. M. Friday. OBITUARY October 7, l956 Mrs. Ruby Lee Nix Ward, 46, of Piedmont Park, Rt. 2, Taylors, died at a lo cal hospital today at 4 a.m. following six days' illness. Mrs. Ward was a lifelong resident of Greenville Co and was employed in the spinning department at American Spinning Co. She was a member of the Mountain Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, James J. Ward; two daughters, Miss Patricia Kay Ward and Miss Rebecca Ward, all of Piedmont Park Rd.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Nix of Greenville; four sisters: Mrs. Walter C. Gilreath, Mrs. Joseph Beacham, Mrs. Earl Waldrop and Mrs. Ethel Holmesly, all of Greenville; and two brothers: James Nix of Slater, and Sgt. Leonard Nix of Seaside, California. Funeral services will be held at the Mountain Creek Baptist Church Saturday at 4:30 p.m. conducted by the Rev. J. A. Cave and the Rev. Roy Gregg. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. The following are asked to meet at the church at 4:20 p.m. to serve as pallbearers: Delmar Scott, Curtis C. Ward, B. L. Ward, Eugene E. Trammell, W. B. Thelma N. Walker

BUTNER - Thelma Noell Walker, 85, of 307 Fifth St., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at Treyburn Nursing Center. She was a Granville County native and the daughter of the late Garland and Julia Hunt Nowell. She was the widow of J. Lenwood Walker.

She was a member of Concord Baptist Church and was retired from Murdoch Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor. Burial will be in the Bullock Family Cemetery of Stem.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Hobgood of Creedmoor; two sons, Ronnie Walker of Butner, Gerald Walker of Stem; a sister, Edith Yelverton of Raleigh; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Three brothers, S.T. Noell Sr., Linwood Noell and Willie Noell, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be held from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Eakes Funeral Home of Creedmoor and other times at the home of Tim and Mary Ann Hobgood, 2011 Will Suitt Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522.

General Notes: Husband -

John Bertis Westmoreland, born April 8, 1905 was the 6th child of John G. and Mary Bell Boheler Westmoreland. He large in stature, dreams and plans. He never met a stranger and found it very easy to make friends. He possessed an out going personality, a keen sense of humor and spoke his own version of the King's English.
Bert, as he was known, worked at many jobs. Early in life he learned the blacksmithing at John Gildon's blacksmith shop in Grover. He also worked in several cotton mills but quit and went into his first love, that of farming and cattle trading.
He was a sharp trader and usually profited from each effort. in his later working years he managed Archdale Farms for the Neisler Brothers whose offices were in Kings Mountain, NC He always worked hard and found it difficult to keep help for he demanded that they work as hard as he did. He could easily lift a 200 lb. bag of fertilizer. Plowing cotton or corn or gathering hay from sun up 'til sundown was a usual practice.
Bert was known far and wide as a matchless raconteur. I recall his usual Sunday afternoon activity in his later years, was as I called it, "holding court." Anywhere from 5 to 15 men would come to our home, gather in the shade in the back yard and listened intently to him as he regaled them with stories about hunting quail, rabbits or deer, or about his favorite bird dogs "old Jack and Peggy". He talked about cattle, raising horses, working oxen and plowing mules. Sometimes the stories strayed over into poker playing, bootleggers, chicken fighting and sometimes just plain fighting.
Bert's most favorite activity was his annual trip to Oakland Plantation, owned by the Neisler Brothers for the purpose of deer hunting. I'm sure he entertained other guests, as they had never before been entertained. He loved all the 5 Neisler brothers as family and they returned the compliment.
Bert married Vangie Norman in September of 1929 and six years later I was born. Theirs was largely a happy marriage but one that included hard work and "living close". After their retirement they loaded up the pick-up truck and the Airstream camper and headed for Florida every October so the sun could "warm his bones" as Bert said. In Florida, the two of them went fishing almost every day. I can just hear him telling the story about the big one that got away.

Vangie Westmoreland
GROVER - Mrs. Vangie Norman Westmoreland, 91, of 949 Dixon School Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Mack and Ann Cook Norman. She was a homemaker and farm wife and a member of First Baptist Church, Grover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Bert Westmoreland; four sisters, Lillie Turner of Lawndale, Vacie Wallace of Dallas and Hattie Allen and Gazzie Allen, both of Grover; and four brothers, Jimmie Norman, Walter Norman and Mackie Norman, all of Kings Creek, S.C., and Johnnie Norman of Gastonia.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Carolyn Westmoreland of Grover; and a brother-in-law, W.E. "Bill" Westmoreland of West Mifflin, Pa.
The funeral will be today at 6 p.m. in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Dr. Tony Fulbright officiating.
The family will receive friends after the services from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
