General Notes: Husband -

John Franklin Westmoreland founded the "Thomasville News", first print ed in Sept, 1890. It later became the "Thomasville Times." He entered the military service May 27, 1864, and served until the end of the war as a non-commissioned officer of Company C, Third Regiment (Colonel J. W. Hinsdale) NC Junior Reserves participating in the Battle of Fort Fisher December 23-25, 1864, Kinston March 6-10, 1865 and Bentonsville March 19, 1865. After the war he purchased a farm in Bethania Twp, Forsyth Co, NC and remained there until September 1890. He worked in the David S. Westmoreland chair factory a few years full time, then he put in a printing press that took 3 people to operate. The book, "Wheels of Faith & Courage", shows that J. F. Westmoreland was a member of the General Assembly as Senator in 1895. He also had a teachers certificate authorizing him to teach in the Public Schools of Forsyth Co dated November 13, 1875. He organized the first Sunday School class at Hickory Ridge Church. IN July 1897 he suffered a stroke of paralysis while he was serving a term as state senator in Raleigh. Although an invalid, both legs paralyzed, he lived an active life managing his printing and publishing business which he established about 25 years before his death. He with his newspaper was instrumental in securing graded schools, the Belt line (railroad), the electric system, water and sewer system, and other matters of progress. Willorene M. Royal Willerone McGee Royal, 80, Florence, Ala., died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at Greenview. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Greenview Funeral Home chapel with burial in Stoney Point Cemetery. Officiating at the funeral will be Dennis Hamilton.
Mrs. Royal was a native of West Point, Tenn., and had lived in this area most of her life. Mrs. Royal is survived by her daughters, Joyce Royal Grigsby, Florence, Ala., Rosemary Royal Thompson and husband, Craig, Florence; sister, Wanda McGee Parrish, Florence, Ala.; brothers, Harlan McGee, Loretto, Tenn., Dick McGee, Greenfield, Ind., Glenn McGee, Florence, Ray McGee, Florence; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Royal was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Royal and a brother, Calvin C. McGee.
Pallbearers will include Chris Thompson, Terry Trousdale, Kent McGee, Johnny Ligda, Toby Cook and Lewis McGee.
Mrs. Royal was a member of Bethel Berry Church of Christ and was formerly a member of Darby Drive Church of Christ.
