General Notes: Husband -

"Aug 17, 1926: Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Bates, Monday, Aug 16, 1926, had a fi ne baby boy." (Email from Rebecca Ramsey to Bill Archer, 3 June 2000. Lookups in "25 Years of Konawa Newspapers 1904-1929, Births, Deaths, Marriages". )

Bedford was probably named after Bedford Co., TN. (Notes, phone call between Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

Bedford worked for Sam in the drugstore in Konawa. Just before WWII Bedford moved to Wewoka and started a drug store there. Sometime after the war he moved to Ardmore and opened another drug store. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

"Oct 31, 1929: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Bates, Friday, October 25, a baby girl." (Email from Rebecca Ramsey to Bill Archer, 3 June 2000. Lookups in "25 Years of Konawa Newspapers 1904-1929, Births, Deaths, Marriages". )

"Mr. and Mrs. Bedford Bates were in Oklahoma City Monday where they placed their small daughter Patty under the care of a specialist. They were accompanied by Mrs. Bates mother, Mrs. Ed Jones." (The Konawa Leader, Th, 14 Jul 1932, p.1 c.5, Konawa, OK )

Bobby is a very tentative identification as Bedford's son based on the following article and that none of his brothers seem to have a son named Bobby:

Mrs. L.A. Morrison and Mrs. Ida Bates and grandson Bobby Bates were Thanksgiving dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. I.H. Townsend and family in Shawnee. The occasion was so pleasant and jolly it will always be remembered. Mrs. Townsend drove down from Shawnee in the early morning hours taking the guests back with her in time to have a nice long visit before the dinner, which was a very elaborate one, was served. Mr. Townsend and sons, I.H. and Billy brought them home in the evening, remaining over night with Mrs. Bates. (The Konawa Leader, 6 Dec 1934, p.2 c.4, Konawa, OK )

Biographies Published in Ada Bulletin, Ponotoc Co. Hist. Quarterly, Vol. # 21, 2 6 July 1944 Bates, Charles T., 59, born Gainsville, Cook Co., TX. Son of M.F. Bates, decs, and Ida Bates, living; married Docia (Griffin) Bates, born Cornith, Alcorn Co., MS, daughter of Mrs. M.L. Griffin, living. Three children: Lt. W.J. BatesC; Charles T. Bates; James Ray Bates. Mr. Bates came to the Territory in 1887 and lived near Ada on the Fittstown Highway. Owned the Aberdeen Angus Farm. (Notes from Peggy Murray on Bio. of Charles Bates, 6 July 1944, from Bios. Pub. in the Ada Bulletin, Pontotoc Co. Hist. Quar., Vol. #21, 2 )

"I knew there was an Charlie Bates, in fact he lived in Ada when I was an adult, but I never met any of his family. I think he was married when I knew him but he was also very, very ill. Lucille might have some information, but she is never willing to give any information. I was surprise several years ago when she mention that William Harrison Bates, Ben's father, was married to Laura Huey (our great-grandmother). I never heard Ben mention his parents since they were long dead when I was growing up and had no idea what her maiden name had been. Charley built this beautiful red brick home in Ada. That's really the most I remember of him." (Email from Vinita Enloe to Bill Archer, 19 November 1999 )

General Notes: Husband -

"Boosts Bates for State Commander Action Here Follows His Home Post (Seminole Morning News) The candidacy of Claude Bates, Konawa legionaire, for the post of departme nt commander of the legion in this state, was solidly indorsed here at a meeting of the Jonah Porter post, following the offical launching of his candidacy by his home post at a meeting held Thursday night in Konawa. As the Jonah Porter post added its indorsement to that of the Konawa post, District Commander Joe C. looney and Co Commander Homer B. Key lauded the work of Bates as a friend of the ex-service men and told of his tireless effort to secure justice for all you took part in the war. Homer Kay announced that the Co posts, in joint session here on February 22, would undoubtedly add their endorsement to that of Konawa and Seminole. Bates is a former Co commander of this Co. Charles Hottenstein, commander of the Wewoka post, said that the matter will come before the legionaires there at their next meeting and expressed the opinion that the endorsement there would be rapid and enthusisatic as it was here, when after praising the unselfish efforts of the man and heralding him as ideally suited for the honor, the local post cheered loudly the unanimous action taken by the body. "Certainly no man is more entitled to the honor," said Joe Looney, district commander. "Claude Bates has done more for the legion than the legion can ever do for him. He is of the type that the legion needs in this state, and I most certianly believe that his name will go before the state convertion next year." Report from Pottawatomie Co are to the effect that the endorsement of the Konawa legionnaire will probably be forthcoming from the Shawnee post at the next regular meeing in the Pottawatomie Co seat. The impetus given the launching of his campaign will carry Bates far, and his wide acquaintance around the state will assist him in his effort to build a bigger and better legion in Oklahoma." (The Konawa Leader, Th, 11 Feb 1932, Konawa, OK, p.1 c.4 )

Discussions of Claude Bates campaign for American Legion state commander in The Konawa Leader, Konawa, OK in the following issues: Th, 25 Feb 1932, p.2 c.3, p.4 c.3 Th, 3 Mar 1932, p.4 c.5 Th, 10 Mar 1932, p.2 c.3 Th, 4 Apr 1932, p.1 c.4 Th, 14 Jul 1932, p.1 c.2 Th, 1 Sep 1932, p.4 c.3 - Claude at the State Convention of the American Legion Th, 6 Oct 1932, p.1 c.5 - Claude elected VP of local American Legion post I didn't find an article with the outcome of the election, but in later articles on the American Legion he is not refered to as the state commander, so he must have lost. "Jan 20, 1921: A nine pound boy was born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bates on 17th of January." (Email from Rebecca Ramsey to Bill Archer, 3 June 2000. Lookups in "25 Years of Konawa Newspapers 1904-1929, Births, Deaths, Marriages". )

Doctors listed in 1917 Ada City, Directory (p. 72) Sam Bates - druggist, residence at 216 East 12th (History of Pontotoc Co, Oklahoma, Vol. II, Pontotoc Co Historical and Genealogical Society, Ada, Pontotoc Co, OK, 1977 )

Sam graduated from University of Oklahoma in 1915. He took the train to Ada and he went to work for a pharmist there. That pharmacist had another store in Stonewall, same moved there and worked in that store. He was living in Stonewall when he married Bertha in 1917. In1920 they decided to move to Konawa. He bought the drug store in Konawa and they started building a house. The house in Stonewall sold quickly, so they moved to the barn on their Konawa property while the house was still being built. Burwell was born in the half finished house in 1921. The highway between Konawa and Ada runs through where the barn stood. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

Bedford worked for Sam in the drugstore in Konawa. Just before WWII Bedford moved to Wewoka and started a drug store there. Sometime after the war he moved to Ardmore and opened another drug store. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. ) President of the Lions Club, Konawa, OK (The Konawa Leader, Th, 12 May 1932, p.1 c.6, Konawa, OK )

Picnic at Sulphur Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bates and children, Burwell and Joanne, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hudson and children Edna and Pat and Mr. and Mrs. F.P. Swan and children, Frank, Ruth and Helen enjoyed a picnic and swim at Sulphur Tuesday evening. (Picnic at Sulphur, The Konawa Leader, 19 July 1934, p.6 c.1, Konawa, OK )

Lightning burns barn at the Bates farm, ..., Sam Bates, tenant (The Konawa Leader, 25 Oct 1934, p.2 c.5, Konawa, OK. Notes by Bill Archer, Oklahoma State Historical Library, Newspaper Archives, 27 Dec, 1999 )

Sam bought Millard's entire farm from his siblings when Millard Bates died. There was some involvement with Indian school leased land. When Sam died, Burwell bought Joan's part of the farm. Burwell lost the house on the hill to the bank when he went broke during the 1982 oil bust. (Notes, phone call between Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

Millard built a two story farm house, it was across from the cemetery. When Sam had the house renovated into a tenant house in the 1930's he had the second story removed. The house is still standing. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

Big oil boom during 1929-1930. They rented a room to a geologist and his wife. They would drive into the country and see rigs and gas burners. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

During the Depression Sam gave medicine to poor folks on the promise of a chicken, etc. Most were never paid back. He always said that if he could get all his debts from the Depression paid he would be a millionare. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

Sold the drugstore about 1934-35, but kept ownership of the building and the fixtures. He wanted to spend more time on the farm. The druggist who bought it went broke during the Depression, about 1938, so Sam had to buy him out and start working in the store again. About 1943 Sam couldn't hire any boys to work in the store at the soda stand, they were at War. So, even though he didn't think women should work he hired Joan to work. He never hired another boy, the girls turned out to be better workers. Her mother, Bertha also started working in the store about that time. After the war Sam sold the store again. He continued to work there as a relief pharmacist until he was 75. (Notes, phone call, Joan Bates Plaster & Bill Archer, 3 Sep 2000. )

Reception Fetes Konawa Couple On Golden Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Walter Bates, 102 East Swan, Konawa, celebrated their golden wedding anniversayr at a reception Sunday afternoon. The courtesy, given by their daughter, Joan, Mrs. Alvin W. Plaster, New Orleans, La. and their son, Burwell M. Bates, was held in the latter's home, west of Konawa. Miss Bertha Rudell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burl Patrick Rudell, and Mr. Bates were married at 4 p.m. May 16, 1917, at the home of the bride's parents, west of Konawa. "Sam" Bates is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Millard F. Bates, who also lived west of Konawa. Rev. G. Roland West, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Konawa, performed the ceremony. The bride wore a navy gabardine suit with white accessories. A wedding dinner, held in the home of the bridegroom's parents, honored the couple at a dinner. After the dinner party the couple left by train for Stonewall where Mr. Bates was employed at the J.M. byrd drugstore as a pharmacist. Mr. Bates did his college work at the University of Oklahoma, and Wichita, Kan., where he took his state board examination to become a registered pharmacist. He worked in Ada briefly befor going to Stonewall. Later he became a partner in the drugstore there. After World War I Mr. and Mrs. Sam Bates returned to Konawa and he purchased a drugstore. They first lived on East Main Street and built their present home at 102 East Swan, and moved into it in 1920. Mr. Bates retired as a druggist 10 years ago and devotes full time to cattle raising which had been an avocation over the years. He is a longtime member of the Konawa Lions Club and both he and Mrs. Bates are active in the work of the First Baptist Church. She has held most of the offices in the women's organization of the church and has taught church school classes. She also is a member of the Pioneer Study Club. Receiving the guests in the foyer with the honorees were their son and daughter. The Bates' home was festive for the occasion, the golden hue symbolic of the fiftieth wedding anniversary, dominant. Yellow roses, bronze and golden chrysanthemums were in profusion about the house, many gifts of friends. The refreshement table was covered in a floor-length white Alencon lace cloth, swags of satin caught up and secured by nosegays of yellow roses. Centering the table was an antique gold epergne filled with yellow roses and dainty queen's lace. The anniversary cake was tiered and iced in white, the anniversary tier topped with a tiny bride's bouquet of yellow roses. Silver and crystal serving places complted the table appointments. Registering the guests were granddaughters, Miss Carla Bates and Miss Joellen Plaster. Prsiding at the cake service were Mrs. Frank Swan, Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Frank Padberg, Little Rock, Pulaski Co, ARk., nieces of Mrs. S.W. Bates, and Mrs. Bob Aubrey, Seminole, mother of Mrs. Burwell M. Bates. Serving the punch were Mrs. Craing Bates, Bartlesville, and Miss Judy Plaster, New Orleans, granddaughters of the honorees. Also assisting withe hospitalities were Craig Bates and Bill Plaster, grandsons of the honorees. Also present was Craig Laird Bates, 11, little son of Mr. and Mrs. Criag Bates.
