General Notes: Wife -

1. From a taped interview of Hazel Rarick Smith by her great-niece Linda H artanov: Lulu had a sad life. She lost her mother when she was a very young child and didn't get along very well with her step-mother, Rachel Carey Rarick. She married young to an older man (Joe Grice) who was a school teacher (he later became superintendent of schools in Bellingham, Washington) and they had a daughter. For an unknown reason, Lulu left her husband and child and headed west. Her husband divorced her, remarried and also moved west. The family assumed Lulu was dead when they didn't hear from her for several years, but she was actually working as a cook in some mining camps. She married and divorced a second time, a man with the last name of Fisher. They never had any children. She finally came back to MI about 1914 and made contact with her family. She headed west again, married Dave Kessler, and settled in California where she lived for the rest of her life. She never saw her daughter after she left her. She did contact her ex-husband and ask to see her, but he was remarried and had told the girl that her mother was dead, so he didn't want to cause confusion and hurt to his daughter. Lulu honored his wishes, but was heartbroken to not be able to keep in contact with her daughter. Lulu died of breast cancer. She never had any other children. She and Dave did adopt an older child named Jack later in life, but he was, in some ways, a disappointment and a problem to them. OBITUARY August 30, l980 SANS SOUCI - Annie Ward Kestner, 65, 402 Morris St., wife of Preston J. Ke stner, died Thursday. Born in Greenville Co, a daughter of the late Cicero and Letha Gilbert Ward, she was an employee in the carding department at Poe Mill until her retirement, a member of Morgan Memorial Baptist Church and of the Ruth Bible Class. Surviving are a daughter, Letha K. Smith; a sister, Catherine W. Lister; a brother, Monroe C. Ward; and a granddaughter, Heather Smith, all of Greenville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Morgan Memorial Baptist Church; burial in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church at l:30 p.m. Sunday.
