However, James does not show in the Shelby Co 1870 or 1880 census but we know he ends his days with part of his children including Mary J. in Jennings, OK. He married a girl named Elizabeth Scoffield or Schofield, who had been taken as a young girl by Indians-Grandma thought Cherokee. As you perhaps know captive girls were slaves by day in the fields and "painted harlots " by night unless some Indian brave bought one. Grandma didn't know in this instance but we pretended that Elizabeth had been bought. She was restored to her people but to everyone's horror , was pregnant! Mr Jordan took her as his wife and reared the child, a boy they called John, as his own. This was grandmas version of the way we bear Indian blood. Mary Mitchell writes in a 5/1/2000 Email to Mark Divine: Mother(Louise Mitchell)says she doesn't know places, but that her grandmother(Mary Jane Jordan) and her brothers and sisters were born in IN, the southern part, near KY. She remembers her grandmother speaking of Boonville, Tecuseh, and Grand View. She says James Jordan remarried, but none of the children ever spoke of her. Mary Jane says when he remarried, she went out to work for other people for 50 cents a week and board. She said the family were Scotch-Irish, with some Indian on James' side.

James was an early pioneer of Stein Twp. Knox Co. Prior to this he was a S herriff in Edwards Co, IL. He also traded with the Indians on the Wabash and fought as a militia member in the war of 1812. He served at Tippicanoe with his father. He was listed as a private in Capt. P. Andres Company, in Militia Service from Mar 27, 1813 thru May 18, 1814. in her affidavit for Bounty Land his widow states that he served under Commander Benjamin Parke in the Squadron of Dragoons Commanded by Major Joseph Daniels in the War with the Indians on the Wabash River in 1811 and later with Capt. Andres. in her claim for pension she states that her husband was a farmer, 6 feet high, brown hair, light blue eyes and fair complexion. She also, said that they lived seven years in Edwards Co, IL and all the rest in Knox Co. in 1814 James served as a constable for Harrison Twp.

Sion Parish was in the 7th TN Cav. August 1862. He was captured at Trento n, TN December 20, 1862 and was confined at Richmond, Henrico Co, VA
Sion Parish and Eliza Jane sold 130 acres of land to E.W. Autry for the sum of $900.00.
Sion Parish and his second wife Lucy Bell sold their land to a J.W. Bradford for the sum of $500.00 and moved to Decauter Co, in 1902.
Salem Cemetery is located just off highway 641 in the Jeanette community, traditionally has been called Salem Cemetery after the nearby Salem Baptist Church. The Cemetery was established circa 1900 and largely superceded Suttles Chapel as the primary Cemetery in the area after World War I. The Cemetery is indicated on the U.S.G.S. Jeanette quadrangle (1986). In recent years a gate has been erected with the name Jeanette Cemetery. There are very few, if any, unmarked graves. This Cemetery was recorded December 28, 1990. Update May 5, 1997.
The Cemetery was recorded earlier by Bobbie Bartholomew, Blanche Tuten and Mattie Gibson. Their record appears in Decatur Co, TN Cemetery Records published by the Captain Nathaniel A. Wesson Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Parsons, TN, 1984, PP. 508-517. Names of children were in the Family Bible.
