Cyrus Jones Tuesday a telegram was received announcing the drowning of Cyrus Jones and son, in the Elk River mill pond, Humboldt Co. From the Times, it is learned the son with a companion was riding on a log, and in attempting to jump ashore, fell into the water and sank. His companion gave the alarm to the father who was employed nearby. Mr. Jones rushed to the pond and dived in to rescue his boy. He was seen to come to the surface with the boy on his back, but immediately sank again with his burden. It is believed Mr. Jones struck a sunken log in the bottom of the slough when he dived, a severe contusion on the right temple and a cut on the outer corner of the eye, indicating this. Cyrus Jones was a native of Crescent City, aged 38 years. He leaves a wife, the daughter of Eli Howland of Elk Valley, mother, four brothers, and three sisters to mourn his untimely demise. Though he had not resided here for several years, Mr. Jones had a large circle of friends in Crescent City. On receipt of the news, M. Jones left for the scene of the accident.

General Notes: Husband -

By 1850, he left his family and was learning the millwright trade. He lat er switched to farming in Auglaize Co.,Ohio. Left for Oregon in 1865 by wagontrain and lost their daughter Emma during the trip. In the Oregon Territory, their wagontrain came upon a single wagon and let it join their wagontrain. It was the Cooley wagon. Their son Eli's daughter Florence later married Henry Cooley. By 1880 he had become one of the principal Dairymen of the Smith River Valley, California with some 477 acres. He died in 1920 where he was living with his daughter Florence & family

Simon was placed as the second son of John. Simon never appeared in a cens us record. He married Betsy Hudson, 1 September 1791, in Caswell Co NC Co. He sold 75 acres on the south side of Co Line Creek to Robert Bowman on 1 May 1795 for 83 pounds (Deed Book J,p.4). He sold 125 acres in Caswell Co NC Co on 2 January 1796 for 25 dollars (Deed Book J,p.327). He sold 75 acres to P. Morton on 15 May 1798 for 350 dollars (Deed Book K,p.26). He sold 25 acres on both sides of Co Line Creek to B. Elune of Mecklenburg, Virginia in 1799. This was the last transaction found for Simon. Since all of the land transactions were sales, it appeared he was moving. He did not stay in NC and he did not move to TN
