Waynesville ? Emma Jean Holland Singleton, 71, formerly of Chatham St. died Sunday, June 25, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Carroll and Ruby Long Holland. She was preceded in death by a son, James Roy Singleton, who died in 1985.
Jean is survived by a daughter, Sandra Singleton; two sons, Jeff Singleton and Tim Singleton and his wife Teresa, of Simpsonville, S.C.; a sister, Carolyn H. Pressley of Canton; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27, at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. William Terrell officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of the daughter Sandra Singleton, 91 Liner Street, Waynesville, NC.

WILMINGTON - Alan Jarrett Tew, 43, of Wilmington, died Sunday, April 26, 2009, at his residence.

Alan was born November 13, 1965, in High Point, NC, son of Harriette Hooker Tew and the late Joe Tew.

After graduating from Thomasville High School in 1984, Alan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from UNC Greensboro in 1989. He was a C.P.A. with McGladrey & Pullen, LLC, and then became C.E.O. for Markraft Cabinet Inc.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Stephanie C. Tew; two daughters, Grace Tew and Maggie Holland; son, Jacob Holland; four brothers, Ray Tew, Chuck Tew and wife, Lisa, Tommy Tew and wife, Deb, and Jeff Tew; niece, Lillian Tew; and five nephews, Nathaniel Tew and wife, Mary, Arthur Tew, Willis Tew, CJ Tew, and Joseph Tew.

A funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1401 South College Road, with Rev. Margaret Hockett officiating. Interment will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, at the church, from 1 p.m. until the service hour.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Alan's name to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

"BASCOM B. WESTMORELAND, 87, of Grand Prairie died Thursday, Oct. 14, at a local hospital. Mr. Westmoreland was born in Georgia Township, Nevada County, Ark., was formerly of Houston and had lived in the Grand Prairie area since 1943. He was a carpenter.

He is survived by daughters, Faye Sivley of Grand Prairie and Effie L. James of Santa Fe (Tex.); brother, Clyde Westmoreland of Houston; sister Lena Lind of Austin; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Speas
Robert Bruce Speas, 82, of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert P. Speas and Jessie Westmoreland Speas; and his wife, Elizabeth Hollingsworth Speas. Survivors include his brothers, Herbert Ted Speas of Virginia Beach, Va., Joseph E. Speas of Bridgewater, Va., and James C. Speas of Brookings, Ore.; sister, Jessie S. Barbour; and a special friend, Dorothy Gregory. He was a WWII veteran and was engaged in the auto body repair business until his retirement. The family received friends Friday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., Mechanicsville. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 8005 Atlee Rd., Mechanicsville. Interment at Dale Memorial Park, Chesterfield, Va

Woodruff

John William "Bill" Westmoreland, 50, of 700 River Road, passed away Friday, March 21, 2008.

A native of Woodruff, he was the son of Gerald and Julia Greene Westmoreland of Woodruff and the wonderful husband and companion of Jeanne Hollingsworth Westmoreland of 26 years. He was a member of Pineview Baptist Church and was an employee with General Electric in Greenville as a machinist.

Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Debbie Westmoreland of Woodruff; maternal grandmother, Alta Lorene Jennings of Inman; mother-in-law, Jean Blackwell of Greenville; two uncles, Dr. Thomas Westmoreland and his wife, Dianne of Spartanburg, Robert Westmoreland and his wife, Jan of Woodruff; two nephews, Ross and his wife, Amy and their daughter, Kelsey, and Drew Westmoreland; one niece, DeAnna Smith and her husband, Nick; first cousins, Pat and Karri Westmoreland, Jason and Casie Foster, Molly and Jason O'Dell and Ben Westmoreland; second cousins, Layla Estelle Foster and Steven O'Dell.

Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, March 23, 2008, at 4 p.m. at Bellview Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Daniel Bryant.

The family is at the residence and will receive friends immediately following the service at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Bill Westmoreland may be made to the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center, 250 Dewey Avenue, Spartanburg, SC 29303

Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Visitation will also be from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Butte.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Butte with Rev. Bill Wendt and Chaplain C. L. Knauer officiating. Burial will follow at the Eagle Butte Cemetery.

Velma was born April 14, 1915, at Eagle Butte, SD, to Charlie and Ida (Lay) Holloway. (She was always "Pete" to her dad.)

She married Calvin L. Smith on June 4, 1933. Cal passed away in 1974. She married Glynn Hurst in 1980 who passed away in 1990. She married Irwin Richardson November 17, 1999.

Velma was very active in the family business of trucking and ranch life and always loved to ride horseback. She was involved in many civic activities including the American Legion Auxiliary, American Business Women's Assn., and the Minneluzahan Senior Citizens Assn., but the one she is most remembered for is her singing. She sang at most of the funerals for 40 plus years. Sunday singings at the Holloway's were prominent with her Dad's bass loud and clear. She retired from the Eagle Butte Postal Service in 1975 and moved to Rapid City in 1978. Although she was involved, her main love was her grandchildren. She loved to entertain and was noted for her hospitality. Her home was always open. Velma and her husband, Cal, took in many extended family members and others, including every stray cowboy from Canada to Mexico.

She is survived by her husband, Irwin Richardson, Rapid City; three children and their spouses, Mary and Bruce Knauer, Rapid City, Calvin Smith, Jr., and Rhea, Lantry, SD, and Charles and Betty Smith, Winterset, IA; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Jessie Lee Russell, Lola Jean Frederickson, Lila June Jones, and Pete Richardson.
