He arrived in Philadelphia in 1784 and went to live with an uncle, Isaac Means, on the south branch of the Potomac, near Moorefield, VA in Hampshire Co. He married Jane Neely and had two sons and two daughters before Jane's death. From the notes of Connie Street. He paid taxes for property on Stony Run, which is only about a mile long. He came to America about 1780. He married Jane Neely ca. 1785; married Mary Henry about 1793; and married his third wife, Mrs. Margaret Linger, in 1826. By 1811, he was living on Hacker's Creek near the town of Berlin. In 1832, Robert claimed service in the American Revolution, hoping to get boundy land; but his claim was denied when neighbors testified that he was "on the other side of the ocean" during the war. Robert and Jane had five or six children: Jacob served in the War of 1812; Indians may have killed John; Robert and Sarah remained single; Nellie has a large number of descendants. We're not sure if child number 6, Jane , is the daughter of Jane Neely or Mary Henry. Robert and Mary had at least eleven children. Isaac and Tabitha went to Ohio. The other children remained in Central WV. Information on Robert's descendants is being colleted and compiled by Connie Street. Robert married second, Mary Henry, the daughter of Aaron and Rebecca Burrell Henry, (1763 - 1825) ca. 1793 and had at least ten children: Rebecca, Isaac, Mary Ann, Otho, Elizabeth, Sophia, Tabitha, Mariah, Margaret, and Amy. Without definite dates, we are not sure if Robert's sixth child, Jane is the daughter of Jane Neely or Mary Henry. Robert married third, Marrgaret Linger (1763 - 1850) in March 1826. Robert died between 1834 and 1850. According to tradition, Robert ran away from his home in Ireland and came to America when he was eighteen. There are two stories relating the reason for his emigration. (1) He did not want to marry the girl his father had chosen for him. Instead, Robert wished to marry another girl. Some researchers believe Jane Neely, who became Robert's wife shortly after he arrived in America, was that girl. (2) Robert was sent to the well to fill a very expensive pitcher with water. Robert tripped and fell and the pitcher broke. Rather than returning to the house to face severe punishment, he ran away. For whatever reason, Robert came to America about 1784, and later joined an uncle, Isaac Means, at the manor house known as "The Burg," west of Romney. In 1789, Robert Means owned four hundred acres of land along the Cheat River. The name Robert Means shows up several times in early Monongalia, Harrison, and Lewis Co. records. Born Aug. 26, 1926 in Huntington County to Ira and Clara (Bouse) Stout, his marriage on Sept. 13, 1953 in Huntington was to the former Norma J. Hensel, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Alan Stout of Bluffton, Andrew Stout of Bluffton, Nathan Stout of Bloomington; three daughters, Molly (Michael) Bauer of Fort Wayne; Makaye (William) Conrad of O?Fallon, Ill., and Martha (Denny) Atkinson of Montpelier; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Stout. There will be no services or calling. Burial will be at Stahl Cemetery. Arrangements are by Goodwin Memorial Chape
