Maxine J. Pickett, 80, of Marshall, formerly of Raytown, died Oct. 29, 2006, at Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in Portland, Ore.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Smith Chapel Methodist Church in Napton, with the Rev. John Pinkston officiating. Burial will be in the Smith Chapel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Marshall Philharmonic or the Salvation Army in care of the Campbell-Lewis Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pickett was born July 8, 1926, in Chilocco, Okla. the daughter of the late Robert I. Griffin and Inez Hamett Griffin. She was a graduate of Arkansas City High School in Arkansas City, Kan., and graduated from St. Margaret's School of Nursing. She lived most of her adult life in Raytown before moving to Marshall in Sept. 2004.
She was a registered nurse at Research Medical Center in Kansas City for more than 25 years. After retiring from nursing, she was a salesclerk at Dillard's Department Store for 10 years. She then worked in the after-school program for the Raytown School District for two years. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Raytown and the Marguerite McNair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a volunteer in the Raytown School District Friends program.
She is survived by three children, Connie Pickett of Portland, Ore.; Marcia Gorrell and husband Keith of rural Napton, and David Pickett and wife Mary of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Roberta Candelario of San Marcos, Calif.; five grandchildren, Bill Gorrell, Rob Gorrell, Beatrice Pickett, Casey Pickett and Cole Pickett; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Robert, who died in infancy; three brothers, Robert Griffin, Ripley Griffin and Jessie Griffin and one sister, Elizabeth Holland.

Est. Bethel HS in Woodruff, SC Many there are to stand forth and attest the faith and works of Harrison P atillo Griffith, grandson of Thomas Woodruff. A breed of Schoolmasters he wrought in the debris of was, true to the profession of his father. Armed with faith, he le ft the village of his nativity in Jan 1832 to store up the fortunes of Cooper Limestone Institute in Gaffney. A former president and president emeritus of Limestone College, and had been connected with the institution many years as professo r of English. He was a Confederate Veteran and the author of several books. He was editor of the Ledger, a local newspaper for a time in the 1890's. --- per Tamara's notes.
